I love this place, another one to make it into Melbournes cheap eats.. Coming here on a Sunday afternoon the queue was quite long, but wait wasnt.. Staff ensured that everyone had a seat before taking orders..
Great chicken and ribs, also had the Soto which was average and had a lingering msg taste.. If you like chilli sauces this place has the best chilli sauce.. Also a number of indon sweets and cakes available at the counter that I will come back and try again..
The best indonesian fried chicken well it was actually okay… but go to place if i craved for indonesian food! $10 for fried chicken, tempeh tahu and some of side veggie + $2 for jasmine rice. Definitely filling! + extra $1 for fried bits! But yeah worth to try 🙂
*i think the price went up a bit
The smashed ribs is all time favourite whenever i come. The chilies was a bit too spicy for me, but if you cannot eat spicy, dont ever eat caused everyone say its devil hot. The smashed chicken was lovely too. But if i ask my friend to try here, i always ask my friend to try gado gado as well as one of authentic indonesian food.
Fast and efficient service. Food came out very quickly. Ordered the chicken with rice and the gado gado. For some reason, even though we ordered the same dishes, one came out to be chicken breast without the tofu, the other turned out to be chicken thigh with the tofu. I would recommend asking for the thigh as its juicer and more tender. The peanut sauce was really yummy – go for that if you are not one for really spicy chilli as the other option – the sambal chilli – was VERY spicy. Overall, a good dining experience. Would recommend.
This is more of a 3.5 stars. Along with Meetbowl down the street, these 2 restaurants offer an authentic taste of Indonesian food. Ayam Penyet features rice dishes with grilled or fried proteins as their staple. These are pretty typical casual style dishes and you often see Indonesians eating here.
The food itself is quite flavourful and done pretty well, though I do find that their dishes are sometimes a bit dry. However, this is quite typical of this style of food so that’s not entirely the fault of the food, but I do wish there was some sauce on the rice or dish. Ambience is quite casual and utilitarian – there are a few tables indoors and outdoors but don’t expect much.
Taste quie nice. I like the sayur asem soup, its taste so nice and make me miss my home so bad. Will come back again next time. Price is affordable as well.
Best sambal in Melbourne! Its hard to find a spicy sambal in Melbourne. The one in Ayam Penyet RIA was similar to the ones in Indonesia. I tried the Iga penyet and the empal penyet. The empal was a perfect pairing with the rice and sambal. The iga was inconsistent. Some of the meat was tough, some was tender. What I liked most about the dishes were the tempe. The tempe and sambal combination was my favourite. The tahu was unlike the ones in Indonesia, it was more like a Japanese tofu. The other dishes, gado-gado, lacked of peanut flavour, the sayur asem was too sour, and the soto was just OK. Definitely stick to the Penyet dishes. It was the place to get authentic Indonesian flavour.
