First impressions aren’t always correct because mine were not great. The place ‘may’ need some renovations, and I didn’t actually know it was called Chicken on Charcoal until I entered the premises. It’s definitely not hipster.
So if you have an attitude, or a superiority complex, then stay away. But if you just want a rotisserie chicken and chips (or salad if you’re that way inclined) for lunch then stop off here.
This place does draw a crowd at lunch. The people who work there are really nice, and that helps a lot. The chicken is better than Red Rooster (I like Red Rooster) with a lot friendlier service. If you’re a local, or you worked in South Melbourne, then you would definitely go here.
Bad, just really bad. Burgers had next to no chicken, the cheese was the plastic sliced variety and the sauce that was meant to be honey mustard was essentially just sugary goop. Chips were barely passable. When the best part of your meal is the can of Solo that comes with the deal you know you have hit rock bottom.
Once weekly lunch trip for our group. Great grilled chicken and good, crispy hot chips. Generous chicken & avocado salad and burning soy sauce chilli. They serve Indonesian dishes along with your average fish and chips: Indonesian grilled chicken, chicken satays, grilled beef ribs, gado-gado and sweet & sour soup.
Love the grilled chicken, meat is tender and skin extra crisp! Will try other things on the menu next time.
An Indonesian edge to charcoal chicken. The bird and chips I got as takeaway from here was nothing special, just your basic chook and chips. It’s middle-of-the-road in terms of price. The place is run by Indonesians, so I detected a hint of different spicing on the chicken skin — maybe a touch of kechap manis in the marinade? The chips were OK, and the staff was friendly enough to give them a dip in the oil to crisp them up, even though I got there just at closing time and the workers wanted to shut everything down and leave.
