Its never great to find disappointing service and food but I think it might be worse if the cafe once had a good reputation.
Wed heard of Chez Dre and wed recently purchased bread there ( delicious), so we went back for brunch.
From the outset it was clear theres no one overseeing the dining areas- there are three young women- lovely but clearly inexperienced wandering around with no clear idea of what to do or who is doing what.
We seated ourselves, moved tables together ourselves and got menus ourselves. Finally one server came with water and took our coffee orders. Two minutes later another server came to take our coffee order.
Coffees arrived- well, 3 out of 4 arrived. The macchiato took 3 attempts before it came and then it was more latte than macchiato.
Food – omelette, croque monsieur, bruschetta (not French) were ok. However the carrot cake was very dry and the cream cheese frosting so dry it had split. Carrot cake was returned, replaced with a piece only marginally better…..
Look it wasnt awful but clearly there are issues, with such a large dining space someone needs to keep on top of things.
There are so many great places in South Melbourne- its not hard to understand why Chez Dre was quite empty….
We wont be back anytime soon.
BTW Adulting is harder when the cake is awful

Not the cheapest option for brunch but nonetheless a hidden gem for delicious croissants. I usually grab a croissant on the way to work for my morning tea and they’re perfect with a coffee as it’s crispy and flaky on the outside but soft and buttery on the inside.

This brunch place used to incorporate the cakes from Bibelot before the owners decided to separate the two into a brunch place and separate dessert bar. If I’m honest, I think the desserts were much more impressive than their brunch food. Chez Dre’s brunch food is by no means poor, however the menu often didn’t have any particular dishes that appealed to me. Perhaps some of their ingredients were less familiar to my taste buds.

Nevertheless, in terms of quality of food, it is still pretty good, and there is often a reasonable queue on weekends. Service is ok, however because there are 2 entrances (one on the alleyway beside Bibelot, and one on the opposite street), we sometimes have to wait quite a while before we are attended to when we come in for a table.

Really good food, simple and quick. Lotsa of space for large groups of friends. Good outdoor dinning area. The steak is well cooked and the truffle mushroom and toast is quite filling. Clean cooking, will definitely come back when in the area. Cute little hideout in the alleyway.

Been here a number of times and doesnt disappoint. We had the croque madame and Monsieur. They were superb! Also the ragu burger which was excellent too. We sat in the courtyard which was relaxing. Highly recommend this place even if you just go for coffee and pastry.

One of the nicer brunch places in South Melbourne. Beautiful interior, spacious and a great outdoor setting too! Food is always good here and you cant miss the amazing dessert spread! Unfortunately their staff arent the friendliest and that ruined our experience (twice in a row!) so we wont be back for a while.

Wonderful atmosphere perfect for a weekend brunch, well catered to all group sizes from solo diner to larger groups.
    Prompt and attentive service.
Yummy quality chai, not sweet with a bit of spice.
    Relaxing vibe.
