We were recommended by the UBER driver while we were on the way to south Melbourne Market. So we gave it a try! They were busy during Sunday lunch – a lot of people were waiting for a table. They have table inside and outside but We would recommend sitting outside as inside is really small.
We had Marinara pasta and Morton bay bugs. They were delish!!!! The pasta is so big and has a lot of seafood ($45) So sensational. We would love to come back again
An unpretentious Spanish/seafood eatery located at the South Melbourne market, a sister restaurant to Claypots Seafood Bar in St Kilda. When I found this restaurant on Google Maps I assumed by the name it was a Chinese restaurant, nope. It was busy when we arrived but managed to squeeze into a tight spot by the counter where there was a seafood display. Along with the menu they also plop down a massive chalk board listing a variety of special seafood available.
I had the expectation it was a Spanish restaurant and to a degree it is. Unfortunately their alcohol menu did not reflect this and we opted for a bottle of white to go with our seafood which was perfectly fine. While we waited for our other guest we decided to grab a plate of mussels which was cooked in tomatoes, chilli and garlic. It was great value although the mussels were of small size the simple sauce was delicious enough to scoop up or soak up with the accompanying bread provided.
We also wanted to order a whole grilled squid which was unfortunately sold out which is a reflection of the freshness of their produce. We opted for a couple grilled cuttlefish pintxos instead which were doused in a chilli squid ink sauce. A problem I had with this was that the skewers were burnt and while dislodging them out there were shards of wood that broke off inside the squid. The dish wasn’t bad however, briny and rich from the sauce and a bit muscular.
We also got a dozen oysters to share, cheap (they did up their price from $1 to $1.50 each) but too small to fully enjoy, I prefer meatier oysters to get a full explosion of creaminess. Tabasco is provided with your oysters if that’s your thing. We also got some marinated mushrooms which was a cold plate, the flavours were reminiscent of Kettle Chilli chips. By this time there was some live music which gave the space life.
We also got some king prawns which were cooked well and covered in a fried garlic sauce. They were large and had a bouncy texture. This also came with toasted bread to mop up all that sauce.
Finished off with a panna cotta in a glass with a raspberry coulis, a simple sweet and tart dessert. Did not impress nor disappoint, it was the only dessert on display if you exclude their cheese board.
Great ambience for those who love to get their hands onto some seafood, price varies on the type of seafood chosen. From where we sat we could see the chefs cook and they were making some large seafood plates and seafood pasta to share, two very popular sharing items. For Melbournian standards it’s a good go to but if you’ve experienced this elsewhere in Spain you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment.
