Some very nice brunch/cafe style food here. The counter always has a tempting selection of their daily specials. I often get the roast chicken roll which is quite generous. The bread roll is soft, warm and toasted well, and they give you a good amount of stuffed chicken in there along with greens, mustard (which really adds to the dish) and a pickle. Their mushroom and haloumi roll is also very tasty as a vegetarian option.

Also, because this shop is adjacent to the public eating hall, you can have your food there if your friends prefer to eat something else. Overall, one of the better places for quality food at South Melbourne market.

I usually go there if I go to South Melbourne market on the weekends, the food is pretty great and staff are friendly but I think the portions can definitely be bigger. They also have a great range of salads.

A beautiful cafe located in the South Melbourne Market. The staff were lovely and the service was brisk.

The coffee (we had long blacks) was excellent (Toby Estate beans). My partner also loved the hotcakes – a perfect balance of fluffiness, sweetness and tart silky lemon curd. My two salads featured great produce, prepared well, but lacked some flavour. This was especially the case for the chicken and buckwheat salad. A nice miso dressing and some pickled carrot or edamame would have really helped the dish.

    Overall a solid little cafe.

A bit of a ripppp for scrambled eggs – but by god they were one of the best eggs I’ve had.

    Ordered:
Scrambled eggs: Proper free range eggs with roast ($12.50)

    Review:
Creamy scrambled eggs which gave amazing consistency and was creamy without being overbearing. Toast was solid, a little crisp and borderline burnt (just the way I prefer it).
The touch of salad was nice – but it could be a better if there was a little bit of dressing on top!

Connected to the South Melbourne market, it was bustling on a Saturday morning and service was a little slow. However, they served coffee while we waited and notably their water was infused!

Proper & Son is a great place to get simple, straightforward breakfast. Be patient if you’re coming on in a Saturday morning and get ready to engage a little with the servers 🙂

A lovely cafe in the South Melbourne Market. The food is simple and fresh, and I love their rolls and ever changing salad offerings. I would recommend sitting outdoors as it can get a little crowded / loud inside. But if it does get too busy you can always get a spot in the connected food court area which is quite spacious, and still get served from the cafe.

  • Some Bunee Loves Food

Corned Wagyu Brisket with pickles, cabbage and mustard from Proper and Son, South Melbourne market. Made from fresh produce direct to out plates. However although there was a generous amount of meat, they tasted ok only. Too much mustard made the whole burger sour.
