I usually go to Aptus seafoods in the market for my oysters but walked past this outlet first so thought Id give it a try. They have an oyster bar and table there with the condiments however did not offer a house made vinaigrette sauce like Aptus does. A big let down was that the oysters were not cold. It may be a personal preference but I feel like oysters dont taste fresh if theyre room temperature. The Sashimi were not that cold and seemed a bit old. The sliced pieces were also rather thin … wont be coming back sorry

Over the years we have travelled an hour just for the oysters here. They are the most freshest, creamiest and naturally sweet oysters and the condiments provided at the oyster bar rounds out the experience!
Smokey bay oysters were our most recent selection and they were perfection. The Sydney rock and Tasmanian oysters are also beautiful. YUM!
We prefer to shop here for our seafood rather than at Aptus, although Aptus appears to be more popular. The staff here are friendly and are more willing to help you choose your seafood, de-bone fish and so on, so it is more of a pleasure to shop here. The seafood has always been great, so we have no problems recommending it. The sashimi trays don’t look very appetizing though, and are quite expensive for what you get, though this is the same with Aptus as well, hence I wouldn’t recommend the sashimi at South Melbourne Market.
