Arrived at the Palace Hotel thanks to Timeout magazine’s best 50 pubs in Melbourne 2017 (position #2). The Palace was also named pub of the year in 2016.
My anecdotal experience was a little less award winning, due to the quality of the food.
The place is pretty worn, which is no problem. The service was really friendly, which was nice. There seem to be a lot of locals that frequent the place (due to the familial banter between them and the staff) which creates a nice atmosphere. There were dogs! (DOGS!) which I definitely enjoyed petting.
We ordered and parma and a steak and both were sorta kinda average. Additionally, the parma was sans ham (worked it out halfway through, which raises questions of its own how many pigs are we unnecessarily killing for very little flavour return?).
Food is at best inconsistent. Ill leave this one for the locals.
I’m really not sure what the appeal of this place is. I find it to be extremely costly for lunch when compared with other venues in the area. I was let down with soggy chips and a small bit of salmon for over $28. When you add on a sole pint of beer, you’re looking at over $40. They also had the nerve to charge a credit card fee after their sky high prices without telling me. I only found this out by looking at my credit card statement. Very poor service by the barman to take a card off you, scan it for a different amount than the amount he called out and not offer a receipt.
This is a grand suburban pub that fits the grand suburban tradition. Dogs in the beer garden, sport on the telly, locals bellying up to the bar, and a winter fire in the dining room. Nothing fancy, nothing flash, just great pub food, and friendly service. Check out the pizzas, they are awesome.
