I went to South Melbourne today to meet up with a friend for lunch. I’m not familiar with South Melbourne so my friend shortlisted a few places and we decided to go for Chinese dumplings.
LOCATION
Three Little Dumplings is conveniently situated on Clarendon Street. I took the tram from the city and got off at York Street/Clarendon Street stop and it was a less than 1 minute walk to the place.
A very small establishment with a few tables, very casual set up.
SERVICE
A young waitress greeted as as we walked in, gave us some menu’s and spoke really quickly about going to the counter to order.
Basically its very limited service. You view the menu, go to the register order and pay for your food. You’re given a number and food is served to you.
Near the entrance to the front door there is a shelf where you can help yourself to cups and fill with water or hot tea. There are spare bowls, napkins, chopsticks and cutlery.
MENU
The menu is set out very simple and easy to read format.
My friend had a loyalty card for every meal order you get a stamp. Not sure how many stamps you get till you can have 6 pieces of boiled dumplings but today was our lucky day because we were able to redeem boiled dumplings, and we picked Boiled Pork Dumplings.
We ordered:
L13: Shredded Pork Fried Noodles, $10.80
L8: Beef Brisket with Noodle Soup, $9.80
PRICE
I would say the price for the items were pretty standard/average price. Similar to what you pay if eating in the city.
I guess the bonus for us was that we were able to get free boiled dumplings with our meal, thanks to my friend using her loyalty card. She rarely goes to this place but the card is shared amongst her colleagues so hence her card had so many stamps.
VERDICT
I ordered the Shredded Pork Fried Noodles and I thought overall the dish was average. There wasnt enough flavour. Although the serving was quite generous, I couldn’t finish it all anyways. The pork was a little tasteless. Wish I could say good things about it but unfortunately not.
The boiled pork dumplings was bland and my friends Beef Brisket Noodle Soup had flavour and but the beef was a little tough.
Can get better quality for similar price in the city, however for South Melbourne I think limited options.
