My husband and I went to France-Soir for the first time a couple of weeks ago for dinner on a Friday night. I immediately loved how authentically French the restaurant was, it made me feel like I was over in Paris. The restaurant seems to have a very loyal local following, with many guests coming in and greeting all the staff personally.
I had a glass of the Billecart-Salmon champagne, which I thought was quite reasonably priced (and needless to say, tasted delightful)! We had the terrine and the duck rillette to share for entre. Both were tasty but I preferred the terrine, as I found the rillette to be a little greasy and fatty for me, moreso than other rillettes Ive had.
We then both had the entrecte for main my husband had the bearnaise sauce, and I had the mushroom sauce. I liked how there was a choice of sauces, as I am a HUGE fan of mushroom sauce! I didnt love the steak, I found there was a fair bit of fat and gristly bits which I didnt want to eat. The char on it was beautiful though, and it was cooked medium rare, exactly how we asked for it. The fries were a little overcooked for my liking, and couldve done with more salt.
We then shared the crme brle for dessert which was spectacular one of the best weve ever eaten.
I loved the overall vibe of the restaurant, however there was a table of loud/obnoxious drunk men sitting at a table nearby which ruined it a bit (I got the feeling they mightve been regulars). I would probably return to France-Soir, but not in a massive hurry.
I think I understand why some customers complain that the wait staff at France-Soir are rude and arrogant. Its because those customers have no sense of humour. And secondly there is something lost in translation; in other words, they dont get the French. We, on the other hand, had the most hilarious night with all the wait staff. They were full of sass and attitude and we loved it. One looked at my BYO Prosecco and asked if it was a gift for the kitchen? Another waiter mimed a stab to the heart as he poured the insulting Italian wannabe into our glasses. So funny! I think people just dont get them, but all the staff made our night a truly memorable one and we love them for it.
Suffice to say that France- Soir lived up to and then exceeded all my expectations. For a start its a classically beautiful little restaurant. You feel immediately transported to another world. By 7.00pm the place was bustling and its only a Tuesday night! By 8pm we had to squeeze our way out of a packed house.
Its really hard to choose from the menu as everything seems good but for sentimental reasons I ordered Coquille St Jacques. There was a little French bistro in Kings Cross years ago, where we could get food really late at night, and the scallops were my favourite. They were nothing compared to tonights dish which was just sublime. My main was the John Dory, paired with a simple butter lettuce salad, asparagus with truffles and pomme frites. My friends had the sea perch dumplings and the goat cheese croutons respectively. As her plate arrived with rocket instead of endive, it became a running gag all night. Frise? Frise? They both had the duck lorange as a main; a very generous helping of confit leg and some breast.
We still managed dessert. We had to! And one thing we all agreed on at the end of the night was: it was perfection! Could not fault it.
I love the lively ambience of this establishment. We had an early dinner reservation so was able to witness the build-up with patrons slowly streaming in and waiting staff switch from prepping through to serving. Food is unpretentious, simple and as far as memory serves classical. I’ve been here many years back and I recalled the same items on the menu, e.g. escargots, streak tartare and streak frites. For a moment I wished they had added duck / goose liver pate on the menu but alas no. Service-wise I have observed has been purely transactional but if you’re a regular, you get the special treatment and there seems to be quite a lot of regulars!
One of the few places I like for French . The food here is exceptionally done , simple with traditional techniques . We always get the steak and escargots . Highly recommend
