Great setting along the banks of the Yarra , perfect for Spring and Summer days.
Service was a little slow getting menus and we waited a good 10 minutes or so at the table before getting menus and coffees. The Almond latte is really good so top points on the coffee.
Had the Green Country Breakfast which was good but felt it was missing something. A little disappointed ordered hard poached eggs and got runny eggs instead but not a train smash.
Our waitress was pleasant and service good.
One if the only perks this cafe has is that it’s located on the Yarra. A spring day, coffee and breakfast sounds a treat but it’s the coffee and breakfasts that don’t meet expectations.
The menu doesn’t reflect the expanded brunch culture and consequently, Melbourne’s changed palate. Bacon and eggs is great, but at a cafe it simply won’t do. The menu is lacking zing or a feature dish people will travel for. It’s just a cafe that charges more for a cup of tea than a cup of coffee. Teas at currently $5 which is very steep considering it’s just boiling water and a teabag. Coffee, that requires beans, milk and skill to create, $4.30. Not happy.
Don’t get me started on the mould on the skin of my young coconut (a sign that it’s been sitting there for a while). The coconut water was sour, yellow like pee and tasted awful. Not sweet and refreshing at all. It was the worst tasting coconut I’ve ever had. Either the storage method need improvement or the coconuts are past their use by date. I couldn’t drink it…
I had the breakfast special, beetroot cured salmon. It tasted like smoked salmon not fresh fish that is used in curing. I expected an orange salmon with a red strip around the edges as you would see when you cure a fresh fillet with salt, herbs, citrus and beetroot, but the whole slice was florescent pink, the colour of beetroot. It seemed that the slices of pre-made smoked salmon were left in beetroot juice and then thrown on the plate. The two eggs, two pieces of toast, the potatoes, herbs and salmon were thrown on the plate with some sauce covering it up. Not nice at all.
An interesting experience.
5 stars for an almost perfect brunch experience; went with the wife and young bub this morning and came away full of great food and reasonably pleased with the service that went with it.
We arrived around 11:30 and were quickly found a pram-friendly table inside, with the staff moving furniture to accommodate the pram and, after a further request, a high-chair (as an aside, it was one of the better high-chairs we have encountered – our bub had a ball). Our first order for drinks was quickly taken, with mine, a bottled soft-drink, delivered promptly; the first minor blemish was a delay in having the banana smoothie brought out. Once alerted to the delay, the staff were all over the situation and had it brought out quickly. The wife didn’t eventually enjoy the smoothie, but I tried it and thought it was quite alright.
For food we ordered an avocado pide with added egg and the gnocchi special; a second blemish, with the egg not provided with the pide, was very quickly rectified with no fuss. While the pide was great, the mix of cottage cheese and avo was really refreshing on a warm day, the gnocchi was the cake-taker; I’d nearly ordered this also and had serious envy of the wife when it came out. Thankfully her serving was huge, so I was able to polish off the gnocchi mixed with bacon, mushroom, peas, parmesan and a wonderfully rich and creamy sauce for her. Yum.
We finished with sweets, sharing a chocolate brownie and vanilla slice between us as our bub ate comparatively unremarkable puree (BYO). We agreed that the vanilla slice was possibly the best ever encountered by either of us, while the brownie was also very tasty.
We have been previously for a quick bite and coffee, but this second visit has cemented Canteen as a lock-in for future feeds. Highly recommended, particularly when the weather is nice enough to enjoy the outdoor eating area (as many were today with their pooches). Family friendly, great food and great service, how could you go wrong.
