This restaurant has horrible service, waiters are clueless and takes half an hour to get a drink. The food is extremely average. There is a long line to pay which is ridiculous.

It was a rainy Melbourne might that we were invited along for an early sitting at Tokyo Teppanyaki at the South Yarra end of Chapel street. This cute little restaurant frontage opens into a deep and ornately decorated space which was very visually stimulating and traditional. We were here to try the Osaka Teppanyaki set menu which I was excited to try.

We started off with a couple of cocktails. I couldnt go past that middori based Japanese Slipper (one of the only times I like melon flavour). KD went for the Little Geisha which was a kiwifruit vodka blend and was a cheerful drink

The Osaka menu has springs rolls for entree but we were presented with the seafood entry from Tokyo set menu… they must have known we like sashimi and the caviar that coated the sushi rolls popped away refreshingly. The wasabi was good quality and strong for those of you who like the hit.

We also had the miso soup which was a flavoursome example… one of the tastier weve had in recent time.

We were nicely set up for the main event and our funny but seriously skilled chef put on quite the show right from the get go with the way he greased the grill to de-viening the prawns mid cooking, and so incredibly fast. Blink and you miss it. The chef was incredible with the implements in his tool belt and the way he moved them around using a pepper shaker like he was flipping bottles behind a bar making exotic cocktails.

If you like your food to arrive piping hot to your plate then this is the place for you.

Prawns were juicy sweet and fabulous perfect with the chilli sauce that had a hint of tomato.
Mushrooms were juicy and chicken succulent and melt in your mouth with a teriyaki sauce. Calamari, tender and quite lemony, with a hint of garlic and that fabulous char flavour. Steak was flamed and cooked a perfect medium rear.

We both failed miserably at the audience participation part of the evening… neither of us were able to catch the masterfully sliced eggs in our mouths, although we had fun trying. Neither of us was game to try it with the rice!

Our meal finished with fried rice and crisped up prawn legs, Mighty crunchy with a real snack of prawn flavour.

It was a great set up and a friendly environment, I sat next to a regular and had a lovely chat around the grill.

Certainly an enjoyable social evening. Crazy busy on the weekends Im told.

Thanks so much for having us.

Teppanyaki is so much fun and always a great time to bond with the family or friends and someones randoms that happen to share a table with you. I really enjoyed the catching the fried rice at the end of the meal . The food they give you here is plenty as well, staff however was a little disorganised- had to ask for water multiple times

It was our 1st time there for dinner and overall experience was good. We had ordered several a la carte dishes some of which I would recommend:

Sushi and Sashimi Platter – this was one of my highlights being beautifully presented and tasted incredibly fresh

Soft Shell Crab Tempura – these babies were fried well with a good level of crispiness on the outside and juicy meat inside

Tenderloin Steak (Kobe style) – my main highlight being super tender, succulent and melting in the mouth!

The four king prawns were grilled well making it flavorful and tasty but we would have liked an extra one or two more.

Overall, it was an enjoyable dinner but be prepared to spend for these items given the restaurants location and cuisine.

Unfortunately this restaurant was disappointing to say the least. There was more than a 50 minute wait for 1 singular entree to be served and when the food arrived, the chicken was undercooked which is obviously dangerous and can cause food poisoning. They had not started the teppenyaki process for almost an hour when all food was ordered within 10 minutes of arriving at the restaurant. I would not recommend this place, the waiters and waitresses were kind and the music was okay, those are the only upsides, however, the downsides completely outweigh anything positive about this place. #wouldnotrecommend

Only Good for arousing a group of 10 years old boys. Others would not recommend. Food try’s to be authentic but so off key, and not fresh. Menu haven’t changed in 5 years, and same can be same about here cleaning

Went here on a Saturday night a few weeks ago ordered 2 emperors teppenyaki banquets amongst many cocktails and sake shots . Amazing atmosphere very entertaining chefs who really interact and get you involved , but most importantly great quality meats and seafood .I would reccomend it to anyone who can appreciate good quality food and service .(didnt get as many pics as I was quite entertained)
