What a great experience! The atmosphere is lovely, the staff are great, and the food is fantastic. When you are told by a Turk that the food is fantastic you know the food will be great! We had the duck cigars, the eggplant, the lamb liver, the bulgar, the lamb kofte and the baklava. The baklava maybe small but the taste is incredible! The most authentic tasting baklava! Highly recommend

Lovely Turkish restaurant, very well presented. Staff very friendly and attentive. Food was very authentic to its roots. Lovely visit it was, will definitely be back! Prices very reasonable especially for its location on Toorak road! Loved the Turkish passport addition carrying the bill! Top idea .

  • Good Food Good Mood

We went to Yagiz tonight on account of having good food vouchers that were nearing expiry. Unfortunately we experienced rude and degrading service from the moment the waiter walked off on us when we entered and told him of our reservation to the moment we tried to pay.

We certainly didnt receive a warm welcome but were hopeful of better things to come from the food. We ordered the lamb shoulder main for 2 at $80 and a side of rice. The waiter told us thats a small main to share and we should order something additional. Not really sure how a dish that says serves 2 and costs $80 is inadequate as a main but we heeded his advice and ordered an entree too. We selected the calamari dolma which at $28 was effectively a squid tube stuffed with cheese and faro. This confused me as dolma would traditionally denote meat or veg stuffed in vine leaves or cabbage leaves. A quick google confirms this but I guess this was a modern take. I didnt actually mind this dish but found the cheese overpowering the delicate flavours of the seafood.

At this point we also tried to order a Coke Zero but were bluntly shut down with a smirk and a we dont have that, coke no sugar we said? Regular coke? The waiter laughed and said they have a spiced cola and was less then impressed we werent wanting any alcoholic drinks (the best was later when he asked me did I want to add a tip for service!)

The staff we interacted with in between, another male and two females were very pleasant with one bringing the lamb shoulder to the table and asking us if we wanted it to be cut up. I enjoyed the flavour of this but it wasnt as tender as I expected. The yoghurt sauce aided with that and certainly helped temper the heat of the rice. Having grown up on this rice and indeed this type of food this wasnt the authentic taste I expected here but once again I suppose its a contemporary interpretation. If it aint broken dont fix it, just saying. The bill was served in a Turkish passport which was quite unique and quirky to see.

Then when we went to pay I had the two good food vouchers, I dont work in retail so I dont have any experience with how difficult it is to redeem them but as far as Im aware its like any gift card, you put it through for the entire transaction value and if its not enough it will decline and tell you the balance. I knew one card had $100 and the other less but I didnt know which was which. After significant time had passed I was informed one card had worked for $50 and the other hasnt worked at all. I said to the man why dont you try it for $100 and he started to get quite annoyed at me saying why did you tell me you didnt know how much was on there if you know its $100. At this point I had to call him out and say he had been rude since the minute wed walked in the door.

He claimed he didnt even take our order, an absolute lie and continued to be quite defensive (so much for the customer is always right) until the front of house intervened and took over processing payment. I ended up just paying the balance on my credit card because I wanted to get away from the hostility as soon as possible. As front of house he should have apologised, offered us a discount and chastised his staff for how we were spoken to. Instead he took payment in full and attempted to shake my hand.

I dine out roughly ten times a week and have written over 1000 reviews and never have I experienced someone so unacceptably arrogant. What should have been an enjoyable experience, dinner with my husband on a Saturday night using vouchers that had been given to us as a gift was very much soured by our interaction with one staff member. Irrespective of the service the value for money is not there. If I want fine dining middle eastern food there is a plethora of less pretentious places where the standards in food and service far exceed those I experienced tonight. In fact if youre reading this go read my review from Shiloh the fine dining middle eastern restaurant I dined at a couple of days ago and make a reservation there instead

Finally made it to Yagiz and Im so glad I did! The flavours took me down memory lane…Being from a Turkish background the flavours of each dish reminded me of home cooked meals but with a modern presentation. We had the chefs selection menu (6 courses), I can taste the love thats been put in each dish Ive had especially the filo baklava with praline ice cream (yum). The service was fantastic! It did get very busy at one point but the staff were very cool and all smiles. The restaurant has a modern warm look. I thank the waiters and the chefs at YAGIZ for a fantastic experience…cant wait to try your other wonderful dishes!

What a lovely night we had a Yagiz – greeted by warm friendly staff who had a great knowledge of the menu. We ate our way through the menu and enjoyed every dish we had. The chicken paste with crispy chicken skin was delicious, crunchy with beautifully smooth chicken inside. The duck cigars are amazing – Ill be returning just for these. The crab was a light and refreshing dish followed by the spinach and potato borek which was also really good. The marron was perfectly cooked and the duck breast was a real highlight. The bulgar pilaf served with the duck was so good! The heirloom tomatoes were a perfect side. Finished with the baklava and weve already made a booking to return!
