Zen isn’t the best Korean I’ve had in Melbourne, but still stands strong as a decent option outside of the CBD. I visited on a busy Sunday night and was disappointed to learn the veggie BBQ option was no longer on the menu.
Instead, we ordered a kimchi pancake, japchae and salad split between two. The pancake was large and had an appropriate amount of kimchi. I could’ve gone with even more but it was probably toned down a bit to suit the western palate. The japchae was heavy on the mushrooms () and otherwise pretty standard- well cooked with a nice flavour.
The salad was great but also not what I was expecting. It was drowning in both mayo and some sort of dressing (I think sesame?) and avo. That’s not to say this is bad (all these things are delicious), but it wasn’t the fresh dish I’d hoped for to cut the oiliness of the other two. It was probably a calorie bomb of a meal, albeit a tasty one.

Located on the strip of Toorak Rd that offers a multitude of international cuisines Zen is a cute Korean Bbq restaurant with a front courtyard for cocktails and people watching, and a moody interior where the staff can cook you’re bbq right at your table.
They have an extensive menu of entrees, mains, desserts and sharing options. Plus cocktails and happy hour on week days. They also offer a range of banquet options which look fun.
The service was friendly and the meals came out quickly with a couple of hiccups here and there.
We’d never had Korean food before and both enjoyed the experience. Looking forward to going back and trying their signature mousse dessert in the shape of a puppy!
