The service was good and the food came out cooked to order.
I ordered flathead fish (never flake) looked as good as it tasted. I just wish there was more! 3 pieces for $9.
I was stoked to see sweet potato chips on the menu and they were hot, tasty, crunchy and yummo! With a good seasoning.
Overall this was a good lunch and worth a visit if your in the area. Just look at the fish before you order is my recommendation.
The fish and chips and seafood here are quite fresh and tasty – they serve good pieces of fish and you can tell that these are well prepared. Regular fish and chip places would give you big portions that are reasonablygood value for money; the portions here are quite a bit smaller if you compare it to those typical places, and slightly more expensive. However, when you consider that most of the content of regular fish and chip places are the pile of pretty tasteless chips, then the value you get here is starting to look ok. I’d say the portions are reasonably filling for what you get, and in terms of prices, they’re likely about the price of pub fish and chips (or slightly cheaper). So when you factor in the good quality food you get (even the chips taste pretty good), then yea it’s a decent place for a meal.
The one thing I’m disappointed with is, like just about everything that is of good value at Crown, they never seem to last long. This place used to have $1 Grandma Ethel potato cakes on Mondays. These potato cakes actually tasted pretty good and were a good size – we loved buying a few of these and would even take a 15-minute walk (one way) to come here to buy these. Alas, they probably decided there was too much value in that deal and it’s no longer available. They’re just potato cakes, throw us a bone once in a while why don’t you?
Ambience wise, there’s not a lot of seating but we don’t usually have issues finding a seat here. The view is great and the tables are clean, and you might have some seagull companions eyeing your leftovers once you’re done (that companionship may or may not be a positive thing for you).
We’d still come here if we’re in the mood for good fish and chips at a (slightly above) reasonable price.
A solid fish and chippery run by the guys at the Atlantic, you can opt to sit in at their limited tables or take it down the Yarra to enjoy.
I had to get their Lega-Sea which had a little bit of everything. The seafood tasted fresh and was lightly battered and fried until golden. Housemade tartar, lemon and table tomato sauce gave you variance in flavours. The fish was flakey and moist, salt and pepper calamari was springy and not tough and the tempura prawns had a nice bounce to them. Dimmies were from South Melbourne and well, just tasted like dim sims but larger.
Despite eating a lot of fried goods including their crispy chips and potato cake I didn’t feel as disgusted as I would with my local fish and chipperies. I can imagine this being a busy spot during the summer months.
