It is a cheap buffet inside the crown. The selection is not that much and the taste is actually just so so. But it worth its price. I like the lamb best but for the beef a little bit disappointed. Overall its normal
We visited Kitchen Workshop a few days after Christmas and they were obviously still in the Xmas mentality as upon entry we observed the usual roast options of beef and ham had changed to just ham. Given no one in our party of 5 ate ham and thats the most substantial offering available we asked for a refund so we could dine somewhere else in the crown complex.
The staff were very accommodating and were able to provide a serving of beef for our table which was very tasty and did just the trick. There was also apple crumble today on the rotating pudding which, while sweet, was utterly delicious.
Update
I made my quarterly pilgrimage to KW on Monday and surprisingly the dessert selection has picked up. I very much enjoyed the mars bar cake and the sticky date pudding. The rest is pretty much the same as always but for once I actually left full from overeating! I guess because all of the food is so carb heavy

This is not somewhere I would willingly chose to come of my own accord but my grandmother enjoys it so we come every school holidays. Four times a year for the last three plus years and while it hasn’t gotten any better it hasn’t gotten any worse.
For the actual price I don’t think the value is there. These are photos of two desserts I’ve really enjoyed on two separate occasions but it can be very hit and miss. I find with buffets I’m usually so full I feel sick but this is the only one I’ve ever been to where I actually don’t like it enough to keep eating to that point of being stuffed.
The menu doesn’t really rotate and I usually have a plate of vegetarian spring rolls, (they are big on fried food think sausage rolls, party pies and chicken schnitzels) creamy pasta, some plain hokkien noodles with some roast beef from the carvery. All quite tasty but nothing special and in terms of vibe and ambience it’s pretty much pensioner central
One of the more well known buffets in Melbourne, it is incredibly affordable compared to the likes of Conservatory.
Weekday dinner (non-member): $34.90. Pay in cash to avoid that cheeky card surcharge!
Review:
The cut of steak (with a decadent serving of gravy) was still too chewy and dry, but the seasoned chicken was moist and full of flavour. Roasted, oven baked potatoes were also awful – dry and just unpleasant to eat.
Seems like some dishes are a hit and miss – but for $35 to stuff your face it’s no big deal to avoid the mediocre food and just pile your plate up with what’s good.
There’s a wide selection of meats and food on offer – enough for you to go around twice and try little portions of different things. No dish really stands out amongst all the cacophony but none is horrible that it would deter me from coming back in the distant future.
The service is quiet, and quick. In the time I’ve left my seat to look for more food and the trip back, my previous plate would’ve been gone and cleared from the table. You don’t ever feel pressured to leave which is nice.
This place was so good back then when kids could come in but now after the revamped look, the food variety appeared to be less and the whole cute dessert shelf is missing. Bring back the old kitchen workshop!
