My parter and I are big grill and meat fans and San Antone definitely ticked all of the boxes. I had the beef brisket and ribs which were both cooked to perfection and tender. I love condiments and the spicy bbq sauce was fantastic! Only reason for not giving five stars was because we ordered the pork ribs and later while waiting for our food were told it was sold out and had to choose something else.
Was pretty disappointed by the offering here. The portion sizes were quite small for the price and not very filling. The taste of the meats were just average – it didn’t wow us. The spectator’s view of the kitchen is really more of a gimmick – the meats aren’t actually being cooked in there; they just store the cooked meats in these large, traditional looking ovens and take the trays of already cooked meat out and break some meat off to serve to you. As a result, the food is not really hot, and that was a turn off for us. I know some traditional American joints smoke their meats and so on which means they actually don’t get as hot as you’d think, but I reckon they would still be hotter served fresh than the way they were served here.
I’m really disappointed that they replaced the old Jimbo and Rex that used to occupy this space with Bludso’s. At Jimbo’s you could get a hearty rack of ribs (full of meat that falls off the bone, not the measly offering that’s overcooked at Meat and Wine Co) along with chips and coleslaw for a reasonable price. I think Crown gave up on one of their few outlets serving honestly good food and a fair price for the sake of a more ‘famous’ brand that runs on hype instead.
Food quality was under expectation for the location and price point… we had the southern platter, the meat was only warm – not hot at all… corn bread and mac and cheese were good. Service was great.
I got the 3 meat combo, and found each of the three meats I chose (the brisket, ribs and chicken sausage) dry, and a bit bland. Funnily enough the thing I enjoyed the most was the Mac and cheese. Average overall
Pretty nice smoked flavour ribs. You can choose a mild or spicy sauce to go with it. The corn cake was a bit weird, the sausages were really spicy and the pulled pork was very tender. I would go for the platter to try everything out like we did.
3 of us girls shared The Southern Smoke Tray ($89) which comes with beef brisket, pork ribs, 1/2 chicken, spicy beef sausage & 3 small sides (mac & cheese, potato salad, tangy coleslaw).. it is meant to be shared between 2-3 person.. as you see from the photo, the portions were quite big and 3 of us couldnt finish it.. they also had $6 house wine during happy hour which is a good choice.. there isnt much to complain about as we enjoyed it a lot.. a good place for a group catch up as the seats are comfortable & the ambience is good..
Will come back for:
+ Smoked Brisket
+ Fish Tacos
Came by here for a quick bite of dinner, and found the food a bit hit and miss. Whilst some of the meats were cooked just right (Brisket), the ribs were a bit dry. Which were a shame as the smokiness was great. The Nachos were a little soggy but the crunchy bits were delicious. We ordered the 3 meats and 2 sides and found the sides (Mac and cheese and coleslaw) just ok. The fish taco was a generous slaw over a fried fillet of fresh fish which was great though. Service and atmosphere was good also. Will be back to give this place another shot if I am in Crown again next.
