Id probably give 3,4 stars rather than 3 but since thats not possible I have to round it.

My expectations were fairly high considering the rating is 4.8 stars and I have to say I felt a little let down. The sushi selection we had was fresh and delicious, however, for $50 I was expecting a little more in terms of uniqueness and presentation.

The salmon and chicken was nice but again the presentation was poor and I would have appreciated a little more love.

The staff is fantastic and so likeable and I really would love to take that more into account but there is unfortunately way too many Japanese places I know of that are on a similar level of quality and taste for a more reasonable price.

I would come again if I dont want to travel far but Id more likely go for a cheaper restaurant as I wasnt impressed with the venue either.

Was lucky to be invited to check out their new lunch items and Suntory Premium Malt Masterclass at their garden lunch. The restaurant has a cosy inside and a relaxing garden, making you feel like you’re in Kyoto.

We tried the delicious fresh oysters topped with ikura & uni (I.O.U), Uni don, Houma yaki and black sesame panna cotta. As well as their creamy Suntory Beer.

The oysters were super fresh as well as the Uni which arrived 2hr before serving. The Uni Don is perfect for uni lovers like me, it was super fresh and the balance of pickles perfectly complemented the dish. The Houba yaki was AMAZING! The Beef is cooked on a special Japanese Magnolia leaf with miso paste on a Japanese grill. The beef was perfectly cooked and tender.

Cant wait to check out their other items! i heard its amazing !

Had the opportunity to try some of their new lunch items – I.O.U (ikura, oyster & uni), uni don, houba yaki and black sesame panna cotta.

The oysters and uni were SO FRESH! The uni had just arrived a couple hours before we got there. The houba yaki (wagyu) was so tender and the miso under it went so well with the beef! Their black sesame panna cotta was the perfect light dessert to end the meal.

We also got to try their new Suntory Premium malt which was super refreshing in this warmer weather.

I look forward to going back to try their other dishes!

Authentic Japanese food with a lovely interior and beautiful outdoor garden

Food: 5/5 quality is everything at fujitei and it really pays off. The oyster appetiser was delicious with the perfect amount of sea urchin and ponzu sauce. For mains we had the sea urchin on sushi rice and the miso wagyu beef on a habachi grill. Both were sensational and extremely well balanced and came with a flavoursome miso soup. The presentation was lovely and delicate and the suntory premium malt beer was the most delightful accompaniment. We loved learning about the beer and what makes it so unique before having a scrumptious dessert of black sesame panacotta and fruit.

Ambiance: 5/5 the inside of the restaurant is extremely tasteful with dividers and lots of red and black. The place looks small from the outside but there is an entire back garden with beautiful plants and seating.

Staff: 5/5 the staff here are lovely and care a lot about customer service and satisfaction. We felt extremely welcome from the moment we stepped in and loved chatting to all the people about the restaurant. Highlight was the suntory beer master class!

Fun fact: the authentic Japanese scallops are treated with the same PH water levels as the sea water in Japan so that they remain firm and tasty!

I had Fujitei bookmarked for a while now as I live in the are and drive past all the time. I finally visited last week for a midweek lunch and was delighted to have finally crossed it off my list.

Straight off the bat upon walking through the doors, the staff at Fujitei were warm, positive and extremely inviting. It wasn’t too busy and I was actually surprised to be walked into a much bigger dining space (as it appears small and quaint from the outside). Once we were seated I also noticed the courtyard space outside which would be an amazing spot for dinner or a lunch date if the weather is nice.

My partner and I quickly looked over the Express Lunch Set Menu and the Ala Carte Lunch options and decided on the Sashimi Lunch Set and the Chirashi Set. These came with pickles, fruit, rice (unfortunately they were out of brown rice on the day but I liked that this was an option), seaweed salad, chawanmushi and miso! Although both of our dishes were about $20 each I thought given the inclusions that it was pretty good value for money.

When our dishes came out I was very pleased at the quality and freshness of the ingredients. It screamed ‘authentic fresh Japanese’ and thats what I really liked about it. We both really enjoyed our meal and although we only sat in for a short lunch break and left I would come back to sample the dinner ala carte menu and try more of the menu!

    4.5 to be precise

Ive been meaning to come here for a while now and running an errand nearby that day provided the perfect excuse.

Walking into Fujitei, we were greeted with such warmth and positive vibe by both its front of house members and interior, which appeared to be carefully thought out right through to the little rear courtyard.

The Pan Fried Salmon Gozen Set was a rare selection by me as I usually try to steer away from anything laced with teriyaki due to quite a few unfortunate places that do it overly sweet. By chancing it here that day, Fujitei has restored my faith in good teriyaki sauce. Paired with my perfectly cooked salmon, it was undeniably fabulous!

There was no shortage of flavour or quality in my partners Chicken Kara Age Set either. The juicy chicken pieces were deliciously well seasoned and delightfully crispy on the outside.

Our lunch sides were all equally enjoyable – the standouts would have to be the exceptionally fresh sashimi and silky smooth chawanmushi.

The portion of Beef Tataki we shared was regrettably the least favourable dish of the day, where the sauce was pleasantly delicate, but the beef was somehow lacking of its natural flavours.

The suggested beer by one of the staff members was an excellent choice. It was at the perfect temperature with a good head and great lacing.

Overall, it was a nice introduction to the calibre of the food and service here, and certainly has our tastebuds tingling for more.

Blink and you may miss it, Fujitei is a hidden gem in St Kilda. Turn right down St Kilda Road and you head towards Fitzroy Street, but turn left and go down the quiet Wellington St and go to this beauty of a restuarant.

From the outside, you cant really tell whats going on, but from the moment you step inside, you know youre walking into someplace special. The interior is a mix of classic Japanese, but with modern touches including murals and an indoortree structure with laterns.

Good Japanese lives and dies on their sashimi and oh my, this place delivers. Usually I love the tuna (which I did love), but this time it was the salmon and salmon belly that were the stars. Fresh, creamy texture, clean salmon. When salmon trumps tuna, then it’s good salmon!

But there are lots of quality a la carte options for you to dive into. We ate a lot, and we both had differing opinions on what we loved. We both agreed that the sashimi, miso steak on the grill, fujitei maki were the clear standouts. I alsoenjoyed the soy duck breast and ponzu oyster shooter. What we definitely agreed on was the quality of the food, any one of the above dishes on its own would be a 5 star dish, we were incredibly spoilt to have several.

Another reason why this place is 5 stars is because of the service. Ryo is a star and you can tell lives and breathes Japanese food. His sake knowledge was out of this world, it was like talking to a sommelier. The other tables were enjoyinghis service as much as we were.

Theres lot of pretty good Japanese restaurants, but Fujitei really is a heads and shoulders above the rest.Arigatou gozaimasu!!!
