Beginning as a food truck, Ostrich & The Egg have recently opened up a cute little cafe in St Kilda. They specialise in authentic, traditional, hand made South African street food and desserts.
Hands down, the must eat dessert is the Koeksisters. This Afrikaner pastry comes in two versions. The plaited Dutch style, which is crispy and drizzled in syrup, and the cake like Cape Malay style, which resembles a donut and is shaped like an egg.
During my visit, I sampled a set of the Cape Malay in the flavours coconut, mocha crumble and pistachio sesame crumble. My favourite has to be the traditional coconut. The donuts have a lovely spiced flavour, cooked in syrup and sprinkled with desiccated coconut. This was my first time tasting Koeksisters and I was impressed. The flavour was perfectly balanced with spice and sweetness.
Ostrich & The Egg also serves exclusive and imported teas from South Africa. I had the herbal honeybush tea, which is floral, lightly roasted and sweet. If you are a tea enthusiast I suggest that you order some tea to go with your meal.
Overall I was highly impressed with Ostrich & The Egg and recommend that you check them out and try some South African delicacies. I give them out of 5. Thanks very much for having me.
