Suns out guns out. Came past Scoops to grab a quick post dinner Gelato on the first warm day of spring. I ordered a single scoop cone of my favourite rum and raisin flavour and handed over my $5. I must say disappointed with both scoop size and the flavour which while creamy wasn’t strong on the rum nor was there any obvious raisins which is something I love about other places that sell Gelato.
There are better cheaper places within a 100m walk of scoops.
I’m on Acland Street, the sun is out and I feel like ice cream. The only ice cream place open in winter is scoops. Heading over, ordered two kids ice creams. Portions are very small even if its a kids ice cream. Ice cream flavors were ok it was nice that the bubblegum flavored ice cream came with sprinkles on top.
Came here at around 2:30 to 3 one day with a group of friends. When we arrived, the shop owner was still setting up so we had to wait 10mins for him to get all the tubs out. I ordered the 3 flavours for $7; passionfruit, wild strawberry, and sugar free chocolate. The fruit sorbets were quite nice and not too sweet, and the chocolate was surprisingly tasty and had a deep chocolate flavour – pretty good for a stevia sweetened gelato! However, the gelato wasn’t very creamy and I think they were a bit too frozen so it was hard to scoop. We actually wanted to order the mango gelato, however the shop keeper said that the mango was too hard to scoop (since he just took it out), so we weren’t able to get it. That’s probably why the gelato wasn’t at the best consistency.
Walked along yesterday and had a taste of the Sugar Free Chocolate Sorbet – creamy, not overly sweet with a thick taste of cocoa – which is normally how my preference for chocolate flavours. Nicely hit the spot without being overwhelmingly decadent. It’s not the prettiest of spots and with competitors like 7 Apples on the same street it’s worth the try.
I was at stkilda fest, when i saw scoops. I thought it was affordable with 3 scoops costing me $7. All of the flavors looked amazing, but as soon as they got into my mouth they tasted like nothing. I understand to have low fat it may lack a little bit of flavour, however for it to not have any flavour only when you had a bite of the oreo wasnt great. Also the fact that one scoop wasnt even a scooop, normally whenever i go to place they are over flowing but i went here and fell disappointed, with myself getting only given enough the filled the brim of the cup. Would of rather paid extra at the stalls for some ice cream
We normally go to 7 apples but unfortunately did not have cash on us so decided to try this place. Unfortunately we left disappointed. The flavours were very much lacking. They all kind of tasted the same and quite bland. While I really like the idea of a sugarfree chocolate sorbet (and it was quite smooth to be fair), stevia has quite a bitter aftertaste. You may think that might work with a chocolate flavour but the bitterness is different from that of dark chocolate and is quite unpleasant.
I’ll definitely make sure I have cash on me next time…
Verdict: Looking for the best quality gelato in St. Kilda? You found it. Looking for the most affordable? Head across the street to Seven Apples.
Try as they may, Southern California can’t quite seem to get gelato right, and when they do, it’s so expensive that settling for Frozen Yogurt becomes the only viable option. Want to know who does get gelato right? Australia, and Scoops is the only place where they dish up the authentic bit.
Star 1: How was the service and atmosphere?
While not much more than a counter, Scoops makes up for their simplistic approach with top class service. You’re virtually free to try any and every flavor you wish, and you’ll be served with a smile. Star Granted.
Star 2: How were the portions relative to the cost?
If you haven’t quite sorted it yet, Australia is expensive, especially if you’re coming from America or the United Kingdom, and while the $6 I paid for my medium cup of gelato (pictured below) wasn’t ridiculous, Scoops hits a stumbling block here due to the competition across the street: Seven Apples. While $6.00 at Scoops got me the pictured below, I got a larger portion at Seven Apples for only $5.70.
That’s quite a bit more bang for your buck across the way. No Star Granted.
Stars 3 and 4: How was the food?
While Scoops may have stumbled a bit when it comes to price, taste and authenticity should be an absolute point of pride. While offering only 16 flavors as opposed to 25 across the street at Seven Apples (Trampoline also offers roughly 16), Scoops gelato is fluffy, flavorful and very much akin to the heavenly gelato you find in Italy. Dual Stars Granted.
Star 5: Would you eat here every day if you could?
I could very easily eat quality and affordable gelato every day for the rest of my life, and I’d gladly do so at Scoops. Star Granted.
