Absolutely delicious! The flavours, the freshness of the prawn, the famous lobster bun lived up to its name and we had just the right amount of food. Highly recommend this place!

    Will come back for:
    + School prawns
    + King fish sashimi
+ Tsukune, grilled mushroom and grilled fish yakitori
    + Twice cook duck bao

We have tried the original Supernormal branch in the city and loved the food. So we were curious how this St Kilda branch compared to those. Supernormal serves heightened flavored Japanese inspired dishes. I particularly liked the generous serving of school prawns (lots of texture, fried savoury bits with a nice tang in the after taste) – I must say, the left over crunchy bits would go well on a bit of steam rice 🙂 The king fish sashimi was also deliciously fresh and well seasoned. We then shared a serving of all the yakitoris, all were really nicely grilled, smokey and well seasoned (the liver was our least favourite, but that is a personal thing). And finally, we loved the twice cooked duck bao – this fell apart with a spoon and was delicious with the sauces in a bao. We did find that the lobster roll was tiny, and didnt wow us for the price you pay. An overall good experience, with great service and a great view of Albert Parks.

Literally the worst service Ive ever had at a restaurant in Melbourne. From the moment our group of 14 arrived, we had to practically teach our waitress how to take our drink order – with many of the drinks coming back incorrect. After the first round of drinks, they had ran out of the pale ale beer and the bottle of wine we had chosen. We then chose another bottle of wine which they also didnt have, in fact this happened 3 times – conveniently only having bottles over $100+ left. The waitress lacked personality, knowledge and just general customer service basics … at one point all 14 people had empty drinks in front of them! Completely ruined the evening and by dessert wed all had enough of waiting around. Dont waste your time – a shame when the city restaurant is a million times better.

If youve been to the city one, this is everything you like about it and more (with a side of charcoal grill). First, they take reservations. Second the serve wine by the carafe (aka half bottle). Thumbs up to RSA.

Alcohol was about standard prices but their range of beers is limited. Asahi super dry and asahi black was on tap… I do prefer an ale but it probably doesnt go all that well with Asian food.

I must say I enjoyed all their dishes, right from the start the peanut snack.

The wagyu brisket was a study in contrast between crispy texture of the radish and the melt in your mouth texture of the beef.

The calamari was nice, and underneath the greens there was a good amount of calamari.

The grilled fish was smoky. Greens to keep things regular.

The dumplings were the highlight but could have done with a bit more spice. I suspect the tried to do a chilli oil dumpling but has to tone it down for the general public.

We werent quite full so had the cauliflower at the end. The xo sauce was good; actually the cauliflower was really a vehicle for flavour!

Took a star off as its a bit pricey. $17 for a lobster roll the size of a small dinner roll (which we didnt have – I had this last time in the city and saw the rolls were from breadtop!). The portions in general were on the small side. We ended up spending $70 per head but were quite modest in alcohol consumption and left room for cheese at milk the cow next door. Cant fault the good but save for a special treat.

Quite a different vibe to the city one. Wagu brisket was a stand out along with the Hibichi chicken. The kingfish ceviche was good- I always have to order a kingfish ceviche. A bit disappointed with the duck. One leg for $39 and the lobster roll was nice, but $17 each person was a bit much even if it was lobster. Prawn dumplings with Szechuan sauce had a nice punch to it. I had the yusu spritz which was light and slightly sour. Tasted more like a soft drink. 4ppl $358 includes drinks.

  • Good Food Good Mood

My husband chose Supernormal for dinner with friends on Saturday which admittedly I wasnt overly thrilled about because I find their food spicy and overrated. Sadly it didnt surpass my expectations with even the infamous lobster roll not delivering to previous standards.

The calamari was probably the dish that held the most appeal for me but it was the most lacklustre. I couldnt even find the calamari under the mountain of greens. The dumplings and the dan dan noodles were nothing special but as a non duck eater I cant comment on the baos. The XO cauli was almost not ordered but it was my preferred dish of the night. Given its not a cheap dining experience it was overall quite disappointing.

Will I return: when Im in the area

Supernormal canteen is a casual restaurant with a smaller menu of smaller items compared to supernormal in the city.
The do have the lobster bun too however. Personally, this is the least worthwhile dish for me as it is so small and costs $17 for one bun.
The gave every table complimentary peanuts roasted with some seaweed which tasted just amazing!

It was lovely to see they have a traditional Jake as charcoal grill where the chefs actually uses fans too when grilling. We really enjoy the sea bream ceviche dish as well as fried school prawns, they were he highlights for me.

The grilled dishes were good. However, I felt they super slightly heavy handed with the salt for the king mushrooms.
Most of their dishes are on the smaller end so if your hungry, it is probably more worthwhile getting their banquet for $65pp.
