What a magical place this is. Everything feels sticky and stinks of ingrained years-upon-years of cigarette smoke, there might be a dog wandering inside (oh&s alert) farting and licking things off the floor, they sell glasses of red and white vinegar called Johnny’s House Wine (I didn’t realise they were so into the home-pickling scene!?), and the other patrons all know each other from way-back-when so holler and shout profanities across the room laughing through missing front teeth. Oh and whatever the opposite of posturepedic is, that’s how comfortable the seats are.

This is a cracking little local bar which manages to somehow squash live bands into an area the equivalent of a size 12 shoe. There is a large communal table which forces you to speak to people you would otherwise cross the street to avoid. But I liked it.

Great Little Bar!. We had a great night at Surabaya Johnny’s! Loved the live music, great choice of drinks, and the eccentric yet entirely welcoming vibes. We will be back for sure!

Elwood. Surabaya Johnny is a new bar that has recently opened on 47 Blessington St St Kilda. Has replaced an old bar that existed there and undergone a total refurbishment under its new owners.
Has been cleaned up and made alot more user friendly with its layout, DJ regularly playing, choice of drinks has expanded along with a small food menu that includes being able to order food from neighbouring shops to be delivered to Johhny’s. Also seating out the front to watch the world go by which should become even better with the planned Council footpath work in the near future.
Is a friendly bar with the staff more than happy to chat as well as fast and polite service which is a change for a St Kilda venue.
