It’s not bad, for a reasonably priced Vietnamese place in Surrey hills. Also does coffee etc. Had the rice paper rolls today, which were flavoursome and only$5 for 2. Previously had the chicken Vietnamese salad
It too was nice. Plenty of herbs to add the Viet flavours. They also serve western style food. A great little mix

This caf, within walking distance of Surrey Hills railway station, is set in an older building. The dcor comprises an exposed brick wall, and lots of timber including the wall lining, polished boards and table settings. There is an old open fire place and sash windows, and the theme (if the name didnt give it away) is railways, with old ephemera like station signs and rail network maps decorating the dining area. Bench seating up front provides street views through the glass faade. The menu is a mix of standard breakfast fare and Vietnamese cuisine, but I saw very few vegetarian offerings. I had a coffee, which was quite good, and the staff were welcoming and polite. It has a pleasant interior and relaxed ambience but I probably won’t return without some greater inclusion of vegetarian items to the menu. I can see that it would otherwise be a fairly popular caf for the locals.

This place is a hidden surprise, even for the locals of Surrey Hills. It’s easy to miss it and walk by – but I highly recommend you go inside!

The atmosphere is cosy and inviting. The staff are friendly and Ken the barista makes a delicious coffee. The food is great and well priced (although it would be good if they offered multigrain bread for eggs on toast). The tables next to the wall have cleverly designed sugar/salt & pepper holders which are a nice touch.

The only downside is that they occasionally play the radio. Listening to the latest music, which is often upbeat and energetic, doesn’t suit the calming vibe of the cafe… If they were to put on cafe style music, my rating would be higher.

Either way, with free wifi, an outdoor courtyard, great coffee and tasty, affordable food, Engine Shed is definitely worth a try.

Excellent local cafe. Engine Shed has a great food menu and offers good coffee that’s always consistent. My pick for the Union Rd cafes.

I suspect the locals want to keep this little gem a secret! From the outside, it looked just like any other small cafe servicing the train station opposite. When we walked in, we were surprised that it had seating all the way to the back. It’s by no means a large establishment but decently sized. The decor was very rustic and warm – with memorabilia from train stations in Victoria and London.

We came here for lunch and ordered quite a number of dishes (cause it was cold and we were starving – stop judging me!) and I have to say, it was all yummy!

First I had the soup of the day (chicken and sweet corn), which warmed my tummy instantly. Then I had the corn fritters which was really good (not overly fried, tasty and didn’t taste oil soaked). My husband had their mountainous seafood linguine which was delish and my 3.5 yo had the pancakes which he finished. We finished off with their homemade brownie which was divine.

All their food was well seasoned and tasted like food should. There was no pretence, no hiding under the ‘hipster’ flag, just good ol’ delicious food.

The menu is very extensive (4 pages!) for such a small cafe and there were a number of Vietnamese dishes in it and on their special’s board as well. We didn’t try any of those but the other patrons mostly ordered their spring rolls (mental note: to try in future).

They also served my favourite Prana chai – although I must say it would have been better had they served it with the Turkish pot and filter instead of in a giant mug.

Overall, a yummy little secret spot that I hope will remain!

Edit: Was informed that they do serve Prana chai with a pot and filter – just ask for a ‘Black Chai’! Yay!

What a delightful little cafe! First time to try Axil coffee.

Ordered a latte: the first sip was amazing, but there wasn’t much body to the rest. What went wrong? Just a little tweak guys, Engine Shed cafe you are on the brink of greatness!

A very rustic and cozy railway-themed cafe that serves Vietnamese /fusion food. Love their soups, rice paper rolls, and vermicelli with spring rolls !
