Its quite hard to find a fish and chip place that ticks all the boxes , but this one did. We have been searching for our new go-to fish and chip place. Owner was super friendly, noticed that it was our first time, goes to show he pays attention to his customers. We ordered the lunch pack with extra dim sims and potato cakes and there was more than enough to feed two people with leftovers.
Batter is light and not oily at all. Fish was soft and melted in your mouth. Would travelling here for good fish and chips.
Feeling like something naughty on my WFH day brought me here to Surrey Hills F&C where the generosity of the lunch pack was hard to refuse. For $11.00 you got a full sized piece of flake (often lunch packs contain smaller cuts), potato cake, dimmy, chips, onion rings and a soft drink. I was the only customer so it was done in an instant.
When I got home there was clearly too much for one person for lunch. More like mum/dad and infant. I was given two instead of the one potato cakes and they golden crispy and with a decent proportion of potato to batter .
The onion rings were fragile but also crispy and also oversupplied .
The dimmy was typical and one of those things you either like or dont. If given the choice I always go steamed over fried but the fried was well cooked.
Perhaps the two weakest items on the plate were the fish and the chips. The fish had a sog thing going on and although the portion of flake was good the batter hung loose and was damp. This could have been caused by the packing as the flake was on top of a steaming hot box then wrapping that in paper without air holes may be the cause.
Chips were lacking in any seasoning (salt, chicken salt, or otherwise). This was able to easily be remedied at home and I guess not having salt in the chips gives people the option to add later. I could have been asked in the shop if I wanted.
Im so stuffed at the moment I cant imagine ever wanting fish and chips again (until next time). Really big feed
