Don Louie’s buffet review. This is my kid’s favourite place to go for dinner but I highly recommend it for families and groups etc. of all ages. The buffet is all-you-can-eat so it’s great value for money, and the wide variety of food choices is excellent with 4 courses to choose from: aperitifs, entrees (including soups), mains, desserts, and a very well stocked salad bar range. Even for me as a vegan there is plenty to choose and come away full from. The menu includes traditional Italian cuisine of pizzas, pastas, and desserts such as Tiramisu in addition to typical Australian fare, even some Asian entrées and sides. The pasta dishes are delicious with fresh pasta used (not the dried then boiled stuff) with home-made tasty sauces in both vegetarian and meat varieties. Pasta dishes on offer include such regulars as spaghetti bolognese and two types of lasagne (beef lasagne and a vegetarian lasagne with spinach and/or tomato lasagne pasta sheets). They also have the more traditional Italian pastas such as tortellini, ravioli, gnocchi, fettuccine, penne, tagliatelle, rigatoni etc. in sauces such as boscaiola, carbonara, marinara, pesto, amatriciana, alla panna, napoli, and various others according to season. For fussy children (and elderly people) the buffet offers marinated roast pork, roast chicken, roast vegetables, steamed vegetables, hot chips, bbq chicken wings, fried rice, mini spring rolls, onion rings, mini dim sims, spicy KFC-style crumbed chicken, beef, chicken and vegetable curries, steamed rice, gravy and much more. Salads are also diverse with the salad bar including antipasto, various condiments, dressings, seasonings, and sauces, fresh dinner rolls and butter, and every dressed salad type you can think of, eg: greek salad, green salad, pasta salad, coleslaw, potato salad, italian salad, curried pasta salad, rice salad, various pickled vegetables and other additional fresh ingredients to tailor your own side dishes such as baby spinach, mixed lettuce varieties, beetroot, capers, cucumbers, feta, spanish onions, cherry tomatoes, black olives, green olives, grilled eggplant, capsicum to name a few. Next to the chilled salad bar are the desserts, which, like other menu items listed above, can vary according to season. The homemade baked chocolate pudding is divine, as is the tiramisu, pavlova, cheesecake, fresh fruit salad and chocolate mousse. Whipped cream, jellies, ice-cream, flavoured toppings (caramel, chocolate, strawberry, blue heaven etc.) and additional topping sweets such as flaked chocolate, sprinkles, m&m’s etc. are also a favourite with kids. The only drawbacks of the buffet are that some nights it can get very busy and if you arrive there too late on those nights the buffet can be greatly depleted, depending on the appetites of earlier diners of course. Most times we’ve visited have been great though with no such problems, and the kids are always asking to go back again. The buffet in Traralgon is much better stocked with a wider variety of food than the old Morwell Don Louie’s buffet was, although we enjoyed going there before the Traralgon buffet opened too. Don Louie’s pizzas and takeaway menu are really good too.
Wasn’t expecting fantastic – but what we got was ordinary food and the worst customer service ever. We won’t be returning.
