4.5. The White Elephant is a 15 minute walk from West Footscray station and the Whitten Oval. It is nestled among some Indian restaurants and grocery stores and not far from some trendy, wine bars and eateries.

It stands out because it is authentic and serves freshly prepared Sr Lanka cuisine. The decor and setting is clean and understated with quiet background music playing. Its a real family business, with Mum, the chef and two daughters in front of house.

My partner and I had coconut prawns as an entree which was beautifully presented on a board, sprinkled with coconut and accompanied by an interesting, smooth, mayonnaise based sauce. The prawns were perfectly cooked in their shell.

Onto the mains. The lamb curry infused with exotic spices and coconut milk melted in your mouth. It went very well with the yellow rice dish, cooked with saffron, coconut milk and many subtle spices, interspersed with cashews.

Their recommended vegetable dish was the eggplant moju; a twice cooked eggplant sauteed in a blend of spices, cinnamon and chilli pieces, thoughtfully allowing those like us who prefer a mild chilli to separate out the chilli pieces.

‘Mum’ cooks fish every night and so she brought out a lovely fish dish we had not ordered. Again, perfectly cooked and with really interesting, subtle spices. We also enjoyed the lentil curry, as an accompaniment. Arriving hungry was a bonus. A couple could order less than all this and have a really interesting, balanced meal for around $50 only.

Its worth noting there are some really good choices for vegetarians here.

For many , good food deserves good wine. There are various beers and liquor available but there is not yet a wine list on the menu. When this is soon finalised, it will allow those who want to enjoy an accompanying wine with such interesting food to complement the food.

This small, family, authentic Sri Lankan restaurant is well worth seeking out and will continue to improve after only nine months since opening.

The White Elephant is strongly recommended. Our thanks to the restaurant for their kind invitation to dine here.

The white elephant Sri Lanka cuisine in West Footscray. Thanks for Jessica invite and appreciate the hospitality from the whole family. Definitely one of the authentic and best Sri Lankan cuisine restaurants in Melbourne. Nice woodapple juice and traditional Sri Lankan curry dishes. Sweet sour eggplant is my favourite dish. Highly recommended for the dinner. Must to try.

Our experience dining here was unfortunately a not too good one. We had to wait almost an hour to get our first food out and even longer for the rest of the dishes. When the food came out, it wasn’t too bad, but the taste seemed to be tone down quite a bit. They were rather bland. The eggplant moju was probably the best dish of the night while the lamb curry was very disappointin, mainly because it was full of fat. Overall it really wasn’t a good dinner

This restaurant had been on my visit list, so when i finally visited it didnt disappoint. Venue is simple yet the importance is on the food. We ordered the lamb curry and Sri Lankan fried rice. I really enjoyed it and I am sure to be back for more.

First time trying out sri lanka food. It was a special experience for me. But the waiter are nice enough to give me some recommendations when it comes to ordering. The food was very tasty. The ambience was clean as well. I will definitely come and dine again when i am in the neighbourhood.

Top notch food you’ll not fault a single item the finest restaurant on Barkley street worth the hour road trip. Cannot exceed the beautiful service here the familial owners are so warm and forthcoming as you venture inside an instantly attractively polished while snug setting. We have tried and trialled a versatile showing of mouthwatering curries. Aromatic understatement! Can’t decide on a favourite!! The external breadcrumbed casing of hand crafted egg cutlets brought a delectable uniqueness to the mouthfeel and can be devoured by its lonesome whilst the innermosts are still cooked and impeccably intact, but I just love dismantling the elements to multiplicate the enjoyable experience. Fish cutlets are to die for. I have converted from Naan bread style cravings to Roti obsessions forevermore since the initial visit. The cheese stuffed variation is a must try!! Dangerously addictive dense layered mind-blowing piping hot fresh off the pan, no other establishment comes close. We will boomerang this growing empire to sample the rest of a remarkably innovative yet authentic homestyle menu until we start over and repeat. BEWARE this is some serious Sri Lankan!!

A big disappointed on what we were hoping from this place. My wife and I always look forward to good Sri Lankan food however the flavours of the cuisine didnt sit well with myself or the crew I went with. The devil chicken and the okra were the only decent dishes. The dhal (lentil curry) was not to my liking at all and the roti was too rubbery. the pan rolls and cutlet were way too fried and didnt taste that great.
The venue was clean and so was the cutlery etc which was one of the positives.
Also the price in comparison to the food and location of the venue was on the expensive side.
