Lizzies first impression: this humble Sri Lankan restaurant situated on the busy strip of West Footscray – I enjoyed every dish I had here. The staff here are so welcoming and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here.
Lizzie enjoyed: Im a big fan of Sri Lankan food and this restaurant has really set the bar for me. The curry is cooked fresh everyday – we tried the lamb curry and the lamb pulled apart seamlessly as it was so tender and tasty. The chicken curry was also delicious – you can taste the difference between the curries. I loved the egg roti and the complimentary fried roti was absolutely Devine – Ive had nothing like that before and I was so impressed. One thing that impressed me most was the saffron rice – it was cooked with care and really moist – definitely a differentiator between theirs and aangans saffron rice!
Lizzie did not enjoy: the eggplant may not be for everyone as it has a more sour taste to it – but that was right up my fancy as it helped cleanse my palate for all the other dishes.
Lizzie rates overall: one of the best Sri Lankan meals Ive had so far in Melbourne and I cant wait to go back to try out some more dishes.
I was looking forward to dining at white elephant Sri Lankan cuisine restaurant after so many great reviews. I ordered the lentil curry, eggplant moju, yellow rice & godamba roti. The lentil curry was luke warm, the eggplant curry was good but a bit oily for me, the yellow rice had lots of flavors and the godamba roti was average. The restaurant was clean which was great. Overall an average experience.
I’ve never had sri lankan cuisine before and was very excited to try out this restaurant when we got the invite from Jessica. This was a family owned restaurant and they were very friendly and the chef came out to meet us and have a chat, and she is one talented cook!
For starters, we had the coconut prawns as I’ve seen on other reviews that it was one of the best dishes. The prawns are really fresh, lightly coated with crunchy batter, and sprinkled with coconut. It was very unique and tastes great when dipped in spicy mayo-like sauce provided.
We ordered the lamb curry which was a recommended dish – the lamb was infused with exotic spices and coconut milk. OMG it was so so flavourful and tender, the meat just melted in your mouth. It tasted great when paired with the yellow fragrant rice which was cooked with saffron, coconut milk and spices.
We also ordered the eggplant moju which was the twice cooked eggplant sauteed in a blend of spices with a twist of cinnamon. It was a soury spicy dish but not really my favourite dish.
The owner was really generous with the food and brought out some other dishes for us to try. The roti bread was really crunchy and flaky.
One of my favourites is the lentil curry – it was full of flavour and was a bit salty but tasted great with roti bread and rice. It was smooth, and I can just keep digging the plate and eating it.
The cod fish was also pretty good. It was soft, and the spices made it taste great.
The devilled chicken was a twice cooked meat sauteed with hot chilli peppers, shallots and a rich tomato sauce. We had a taster of this, was ok but I’d prefer the other dishes more.
Overall, the food was surprisingly great for a first time sri lankan cuisine diner. My partner and I enjoyed it very much and was very full.
The owners were very kind in making a ‘pay it forward coffee’ wall chart, and offer a free coffee to those in need. What a great idea.
Love this place, and really recommend it. You’ll have to pay this place a visit to see for yourself why they deserve 5 stars.
