Mulled wine, $9 perfect for winter.
Flan, $9, great dessert, especially paired with the mulled wine.
Free popcorn to snack on.
Very grungy beer garden which feels very Melbourne.
We ate out the back which looked like the tables and seats were all thrown together within an hour. It had backyard vibes (with a few flies hovering) and music bumping. Despite having a raw feel to it the dishes we had that night were clean and well presented.
We were given some complimentary buttery popcorn while we perused through the menu which has obviously seen some wear. It’s one of those menus where you want to try everything because it all sounds so enticing. We started off with some horchata which did taste a bit like medicine but I soon acquired a taste for it with hints of vanilla and cinnamon.
The ceviche tostaditas tasted super fresh from the brightness of lime, both in the curing as well as a garnish. The crisp base gave it a nice crunchy texture, the guacamole some creaminess.
I feel like corn is a neccessary starter for Mexican cuisine in Melbourne, charred with melted parmesan, spiced cream and a generous dusting of sumac. That combo with lime gave it plenty of spice, sourness and acidity.
Our tacos were also great which came with a wedge of lime (more lime needed) and a duo of salsas, each with their own characteristics. They were all very generous and held up well. The pork taco could have been more tender but the crackling was on point. Fish taco was beautifully fried and flesh was flakey and delicate. Chorizo taco was skinless and had some heat to it, it was difficult not to spill the ingredients.
Would not hesitate in returning and it does get pretty busy late at night as it’s a popular spot not only for food but for drinking.
