This Cafe is hidden away in the suburb of Byford. We arrived at 6.30pm for dinner. On first inspection I felt prices were rich. However, over all the food and experience was worth the money. In a nut shell we loved the food. If you get the chance go there. Floor staff were on the job, a pleasure to deal with and looked the part. We were promptly greeted at the entry by a friendly staff member and without any wait we were seated in a comfy booth as there was only two other tables of diners. During our visit this increased to half a dozen tables of diners. The decor is relaxed and modern. Tables are all set out spaciously so you are not struggling to travel through the restaurant. We were promptly brought water and glasses without needing to ask. Drink and food orders were taken promptly. Drinks arrived promptly although bottles were not opened for us. Food arrived promptly, hot and at the same time so we could all enjoy our meal together. This Chef (Dave?) and his kitchen staff know what they are doing. The plate presentation was great. We all ordered Chicken Parmigiana which was served with chunky chips and a coleslaw/lettuce gourmet salad. There were three of us but we were only given two steak knives and had to ask for a third steak knife which was promptly given. Parmigiana serving size is VERY generous. Crumbing was well done. The chicken was nicely cooked, moist, a good thickness and of even thickness. Provincial sauce was nicely seasoned and robust taste. Generously coating of melted cheese. Chunky chips were nicely cooked, gently seasoned and a real pleasure. Salad attractive, fresh and dressing nice but underdressed. Soft music playing in the background allowing for normal conversation volume but the clanking of cutlery coming from the open kitchen area is a problem. Cutlery in a bucket on the table open to contamination and napkins sadly are paper. On entry/exit to the cafe hold your nose because the smells emanating from the lake the cafe sits overlooking were not nice on this visit. It has alfresco dining which I can’t imagine using given the foul lake smell.
We had been to this cafe on three occasions, the first which was a very good experience with great food and coffee to die for. Since then we have been back twice, and with each visit it had deteriorated. Our last visit yesterday was an extremely unpleasant visit. While the girl who greeted us and the lady on the cash register were very pleasant was very accommodating, unfortunately we cannot say this for the rest of the staff. There was one waitress who had extreme attitude and was very loud and making fun of customers and their orders with kitchen staff. I find this totally unacceptable to ridicule customers whilst other customers are within hearing distance and does not paint a good picture of management and the cafe. The food we ordered was the fine fritter which was so greasy, the bottom of our plate was covered in grease and we left most of the fritters. The poached eggs were hard boiled and not runny. We had always loved their coffee but unfortunately it was not the usual guy who makes the coffee and it was not pleasant and there was an eyelash floating on top of the coffee. I have now given up on this cafe, which is extremely disappointing as the setting is very calming and relaxing, sitting out on the deck overlooking the man-made lake. Would not recommend to others.
4 of us had lunch at this restaurant…waited for nearly 1hr for our food to arrive at the table…mind you it was busy Mother’s Day I presume..when my food arrived(salt and pepper squid with chips and salad), it was cold and the salad was withered! My mum clearly saw my dish being shifted a few times at the kitchen counter before arriving at our table…explained to the waitress the issue and was brought in another dish…looked fresher…the food tasted very ordinary…had the chicken parmigiana, fish and chips(fish way too thick of a batter) and the big breakfast…staff were nice but service way too slow…lot of customers were frustrated and kept returning their meals at the kitchen counter..Restaurant at nice spot…I wouldn’t go back I would rather spend money somewhere else
STRAND….ed- at your table for 2 hours. For those of you who don’t want to read everything I have to write these are some key words for you. Worms, 2 hour wait, bland food, unorganised. Before I go on, I’ve only ever left a bad review for one other place- a place I stayed at that had mice. So I’ve gone out of my way to write this.-We arrived at 12:00 on Mothers Day to find that our chosen table was given to someone else. 5 of us were seated at a table for 4 people, we then asked to move. The man gave us 4 menus for 5 of us. – the brunch menu had changed to less of the menu only leaving a small selection of lunch foods- salad, burgers and fish and chips. The manager was kind enough to let us order one of the dishes from the proper menu – after all this was the reason why we chose to come here. We waited, and we waited some more. It was 2:30 before we got our food- 2:30!!! That’s 2.5 hours after we arrived! We noticed some of our meals went to another table of people who didn’t even order what we had but they were hungry as well so they are it and fingered it before we could say anything. When our meals came they came at different times so we couldn’t eat all together. We had finished our drinks by this time too.- the breaking bad was very small portion size for a big breakfast , and it was as if they picked a tomato from a miniature tomato tree ((it wasn’t a cherry tomato readers) , one of the poached eggs was hanging off the plate so they must have just slapped it on, no butter on the bread and bacon and bread was cold.- the fish and chips could have been called battered oil and chips. THE SALAD had worms. I repeat live worms!!! We have a video of a worm crawling around happily in our food.- the burger was a sloppy average. Also to note that one of our chairs was missing a cushion on the metal wire so one of our bums came walking out hurt and imprinted. We were still hungry , unsatisfied and apologetic to our mum on Mother’s Day , we are also feeling a little sick. The staff did not compensate for this and we won’t be back or recommending this place to anyone. Instead we hope this review reaches out to you and you pick the next best place. This place needs this review as it has so much potential to be better.
OMG. To think this is only a walking distance from us. This is a gem. Wow. Amazing. Two words that sums up our breakfast experience last week. This place has been opened awhile now but we never did try to eat here until last week where we needed some coffee and breakfast. So we finally took the plunge and ordered the French toast with bacon, the eggs Benedict and a cup of flat white. What can we say. To start off, their breakfast price menu is very similar to the Dome Cafes around town. However, this is where the similarity ends. The portion of their breakfast is huge and I do believe that they use real high quality ingredients. The eggs Benedict is to die for. With every bite that warm toast, poached egg and holllandaise sauce marries each other so well that you wish it never ends. But when it finally does staring right back at you is the French Toast with bacon. One bite of it with the combined taste of the syrup as well as the saltiness of the toast o~la~la, I am in france (not even sure if there is french toast in France). This is good food people. Now to the main item. Coffee….. Of course, we all know what makes breakfast is the coffee. So if the food was that good. How’s their coffee you ask….. Well wait for it. . . . . .It was breathtaking. Aromatic, nice temperature, just brilliant. So, hidden gem this side of Byford. My only concern is that when this gem is more popular my country town Byford will be filled with the city slickers. :)Well done Strand. Edit:Sigh Strand. Unfortunately have to rerate you guys. Since the first time we went back there again 3 more times. Unfortunately every experience did deteriorate after. Whilst the second time was still good. The third/ fourth time ordering the same thing came about a real unpleasant experience.I think you guys need to do some serious quality control checks when you are busy. OMG strand. We came about 1030 am and most probably at your busiest time. Over the third and fourth time we had French toast that was swimming in maple syrup *drowning* and also semi cooked bacon (no longer crispy). Hollandaise sauce on the Benedict was also shocking. It smelt a bit and overly vinegary the egg. I will go back one more time this week or next week, but unfortunately if it is still as bad. It will most probably be the last time for us. Unfortunate….
Went to the Strand for brunch on Thursday with my boyfriend. This new cafe has a lovely ambience and its location on the edge of a little lake is a nice touch.Service was also friendly and quick, though at that time of the day it was not very busy.I had the ‘Fine Fritters’ with added Potato Rosti and my boyfriend had the ‘Breaking Bad’.Everything was quite nice, however both of our poached eggs were undercooked and the Potato Rosti was rather bland. I will say though, the homemade cake selection looked pretty amazing, so I will definitively be back to try a slice of the Red Velvet sometime soon!
Loved this place when it first opened, however the food has really dropped in quality now.Kids love their pancakes, however the last couple of times I’ve had their eggs benedict, there wasn’t enough sauce and the poached eggs have been way under cooked.
