Really enjoyed lunch here at the bistro. Surf and turf was huge with a nice cut of steak and fresh prawns. I tried the soft shell crab which was amazing and the gyoza dumplings as a starter. Excellent service and friend staff. A really pleasant experience.
We went in because they advertised a range of local beers on tap, there were 3, and one was not pouring currently. The food was ok. Fish bites were nice, though a touch oily.Soft shell crab average. It was a medium sized chunk of crab, instead of pieces. And it needed to be fried to get crispy, instead of just cooked. As a result it was a touch mushy.White star wings were ok. The marinade was very 5 spice heavy, and had a powdery feel in the sauce. It just wasn’t quite right. The tables were sticky, the music was frim a bad period of the 90’s (think Ronan Keating and Jessica Simpson). The staff were friendly and cheerful.
This was my second time dining at White Star, not an Albany resident just frequent visitor. The first time I remember it being extra loud and not being able to have a structured conversation with the other diners in my group. This time was so loud I almost needed earmuffs on. I am 32 and like a good laugh and carry on but on noise level alone will not go back for dinner. Chicken parmy was just OK – my fiancé had the ribs which were quite fatty.
Had lunch for 4 today. Overall pretty good and no problems with the service. I’d say the menu is slightly overpriced. Beef nachos and fish and chips were good. Potato skins (bacon & cheese) could do with less potato and a bit more filling. Polenta chips were a big let down, overdone, oily and portion size for $9 is way overpriced. Also the rear bar needs a clean – cob webs all over the windows.
