Location is fantastic. Nestled right in the middle of the hay shed hill vineyard. When it is a sunny day, it is especially special. Food was a interesting. Fried goats cheese with orange blossom syrup, carpaccio and pork belly. All three dishes were fantastic! All well paired and well seasoned and well cooked The last dish, the whole trout, was a little disappointing. It was bitter, probably because of the Lemon slices wedged in the stomach of the fish. It is common for citrus rind to be a little bitter, but this just overpowered the fish which is a shame. Service was interesting as well. It was rather odd and I must admit downgraded the experience itself. The waitress who took our order, perhaps forgot our wine? Partner ordered a glass of wine and after waiting for quite a while decided to remind her. She came back to confirm what wine we ordered and noting that we ordered a bottle. Which of course we corrected. Then after she produced the glass of wine, she plonked down another bottle of sparkling water, we ordered one bottle, not two. When I confirmed that I didn’t order two bottles, she said, oh that’s free for you and dissappeared. (Later I realised that sparkling water was charged at bottomless rate and not per bottle) The intrigue continues. The 3 dishes I mentioned earlier came at a very reasonable pace. Then it just stopped. Our last dish, the fish felt like it was forgotten. This is when the same waitress came to clear our plates away and asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu. When I mentioned that we are still waiting for one more dish. She left the plates and went away. She walked past our table a few times and said nothing. I decided to ask if our fish was coming. She then said, oh yes it’s coming for sure. It’s very fresh and was delivered this morning and it’s taking this long because the kitchen has to clean, gut and descale it and then went away. I am not fish expert, but I didn’t think trout had scales? May just be me, but i just found it odd. Then the fish came and maybe because of the weirdness, it tasted just that little bit more bitter. After that experience, we ain’t ordering dessert for sure. Now we are off to pay for the bill. Another interesting interaction. I literally never check the bill, but today, I felt the need to. Lucky I did, because on the bill was a glass of wine we never ordered. We waited for the manager to remove the rogue glass of wine feeling like he was doing us a favour. The lady organising the bill asked how was our lunch and I provided the feedback about our rather interesting service but lovely food. She seemed to know that there was something amiss with the waitress who served us. She tried to smooth things over with some complimentary cheese which we declined and received a 10% discount instead, which I was not expecting. It’s unfortunate that what we would remember from lunch is not how lovely the location was or how tasty the food were but the intriguing service
$17 for kid size with 5 pieces of gnocchi and ‘ashtray’ ice cream (so called since 2 of them were basically thrown on our table in a tiny ashtray looking bowl at the end of our meal by the waiter- see photo), $26 for 8 pieces of main serve gnocchi (where was the truffle?) and $13 for a sub standard Chardonnay!!! Ladies and gentlemen not only is this place overpriced, it has shocking service. Our waiter dumped our food on the table and walked away. They also ignored me when I tried to get their attention because they served me a white sangria when I asked for a red sangria. The chorizo was good! The pesto with the gnocchi was fantastic but would have been better with the truffle noted in the menu. We came here once before in Summer (hint: don’t do it; it’s a tin shed with no air con) but since the weather was mild and since there were basically 3 choices of lunch venues on/off Caves Rd on a Saturday during the school holidays (seriously?!) we thought we’d give them another chance. Would we come back? Probably not as I hate rewarding bad service. Lift your game Hay Shed Hill. Your wait staff look like they don’t want to be here and that reflects in their service.
A fabulous experience here with the food and wine. Staff a very friendly and know the menu. Another place to visit again. It was a chilly day and the cafe can be a little cold.
Five girls had a great weekend away which we ended with the degustation at Rustico. We were driving back to Perth so we chose the no wine option. The waiter helped us to pick from the menu to make sure the 2 veggies had heaps to eat. The chef tweaked our choices slightly to make sure we had a great experience. Over three hours we enjoyed each others company and some superb food and dessert. The pictures tell their own story. Absolutely and highly recommend Rustico.
