We finally made it to Goong but the food wasn’t as exciting, or authentic, as we thought it would be . Everything was good, nothing was particularly bad but definitely not worth the money. We started out with some good old Korean Fried Chicken and thought they were pretty average. The original batter was crunchy, well-seasoned but very standard. Yenny would normally go crazy for a good sweet chilli sauce but she didn’t. There was an additional $2 to mix 2 flavours, so $2.75 for each small wing ? Hmmm. Eel croquettes were our least favourite things , although fried till golden and crunchy, we could barely taste any eel as it got mixed in with the mashed potato filling.Definitely not the best dolsot bibimbap either . At this point I was doubting the authenticity of this place as why would a Korean chef put a fried egg in a hot-stone pot? That was just plain lazy and when I brought it up with the waitress, she didn’t seem to understand the issue either. Needless to say there was no crispy rice on the bottom . Beef bulgogi was good, but we wouldn’t pay $23 for an average bibimbap just to eat some good bulgogi. The ginseng chicken soup was our favourite as the soup was flavoursome, garlicky and peppery, with the right amount of fattiness and somewhat tender chicken. We couldn’t find any dates in the soup though, and even though it was good, the price was pretty steep for half a chicken , compared to other places that would serve a whole chicken for cheaper. Finally the dessert that saved the night, panna cotta was jiggly, creamy and had an amazing #matcha flavour , accompanied by a refreshing guava sorbet and macerated strawberries. Was it enough to entice a revisit though? Probably not. I’ve always wanted to try out Korean BBQ here but after tonight, I’m not too sure anymore. instagram.com
