Whilst browsing through the Mandurah Vegan Community group on Facebook, I noticed that the Pen had a new seperate Vegan Menu, so I booked a table for the following night as I couldn’t wait to try it out. I usually just got to the Pen for a few drinks, so couldn’t wait to give their restaurant a go again with the new vegan menu as when I ate here last time over a year ago it was pretty poor, so I decided to give them another chance.Friday nights are really good here. For Drinks! They have a $10 special on cocktails Friday nights, and their cocktails are very nice. Theres always a good atmosphere in the bar and its lovely to sit outside in the summer for a drink or two, staff are great and I always get served quickly. We sat down in the restaurant area, away from the noise of the bar (which didn’t bother me as it gives it more atmosphere). The waitress came over straight away with a Vegan menu and took our drinks orders. My partner ordered from the regular menu and I had a quick look at his menu and noticed that a lot of the items on the Vegan menu were the same…. Same price…..same food. BUT with the cheese removed!! I was furious – why should I pay the same price for something that Im not having. – This was literally the case for every item on the menu.I ordered the bruschetta to share for $13 and asked for the cheese to be put on a separate side plate for my partner as I don’t want to pay for something i’m not going to get. – Bruschetta was good and very tasty though and we enjoyed it.For my main I had the Cauliflower salad. Ive never eaten so many dates in my life at once, it was very sickly and the dates weren’t even chopped, they were just thrown in whole. presentation was poor and the cauliflower tasted a bit wishy washy. I would have liked to of ordered The soba noodle salad but no way am I paying the same price for a salad with the most expensive item removed from it!The Soba noodle salad $29 – Taken from the original menu ”Soba Noodle and Salmon Salad” $29. Wtf…your kidding me right?? I asked the waitress about this and she said you get extra salad….well id be eating salad all night to make up for the price of salmon. This is just a lazy pathetic excuse for a vegan menu. And The grazing board which is exactly the same, minus the meats being removed (the most expensive part) is STILL the same price on the Vegan menu $26 for bread and olives!! If your going to create a seperate menu at least change the prices on it. This is just disgusting. Also at the end of our meal the Waitress came over and said ”Do you want me to bring you a dessert menu….oh no wait your vegan” . – Theres not even a vegan option for dessert on the menu. The vegan Menu is Lazy, thoughtless and poor and sadly would not eat here again unless it was for a bowl of chips. herbivorechef.com
