Have been here a number of times and the food has been consistently excellent. A true hidden gem. In fact, I’m almost hesitant posting this review because I don’t want too many people to know about the amazing food served at South Coogee Cafe. I also don’t want them to go out of business/have to close down anytime soon, hence I’ve gone through with the post. Yes the interior isn’t much and the service isn’t always top-notch, but if you’ve come for great food cooked by chefs who know what they’re doing and are passionate, then you’re at the right place. The scallops entree on the specials board always has me just about licking the bowl clean, the seafood risotto is delicious with a heap of fresh, perfectly cooked seafood, the grilled squid is perfect with yummy chips and salad, and the linguini with salmon is a dish you want to try recreating at home because it’s just so good.
Don’t bother taking the drive to the cappuccino strip in Freo this place does it better, every time I have visited it’s been a hit filled with happy punters. Good honest food.
Ridiculously amazing chilli mussels ($25) and they will even swap out the accompanying bread for garlic bread (at no cost) if you ask them nicely!! My friend and I are chilli mussel addicts and this is by far the best in Perth. We thought it was a fluke so we went back 2 days later and still couldn’t fault them. Bruschetta ($12) is insane as well – yes we tried that twice too!Service is friendly and still learning but super polite. Frankly, more than happy to keep this local gem as our little secret but credit where it’s due – it’s worth driving across town for if you’re not lucky enough to be a local down here. 2 people: shared bruschetta (it was big!), 2 x serves of chilli mussels and a bottle of wine (BYO @ $3) for $65 and we’re now planning when we can return without it appearing creepy/obsessive.
