Came to Grand orient tonight after hubby read a glowing review of their Peking duck in the West Australian. Although overpriced for what we got – it did not disappoint. We ordered 1/2 a Peking duck $45 for this we got 6 pancakes wrapped with Peking duck skin (no meat), the usual cucumber, spring onion, hoisin sauce and some crispy tofu skin – this made the whole wrap more crispy and tasty. The sang Choi bows were a little dry and Im pretty sure you dont get 1/2 ducks worth of meat in that course. We wanted to order the crispy roast pork but were told that they had already sold out. We were quite disappointed as we were the first table in for the night just after 6pm so imagine they must only have this available over the weekend when its busy. Instead we ordered the sweet and sour pork with lychees – nothing special here, standard dish however it seemed like in the whole dish we probably only got 1- 2 whole lychees cut into very small pieces scattered throughout the meat. The Kai lan with ginger sauce was a simple, reliable dish. Service was very attentive with staff coming over to pour tea and refill the tea pot every 5 minutes (Im not kidding). What I thought killed the atmosphere in this beautiful, supposedly grand restaurant was the choice of music. They were playing English pop songs when I thought some gentle background oriental/Chinese/piano music wouldve suited much better. Overall, a little pricey for what you get but if you must come – the Peking duck is a winner. I wouldve given a rating of 3.5/5 however given the whole numbers, I thought it was better than a 3, so a 4 it is!
