Hiss and smoke offers and excellent range of yakitori and okonomiyaki dishes which allow for variety whilst demonstrating a specialisation in these areas. We shared a okonomiyaki which featured Ramen and pork belly, a unique combination which was flavourful and juicy, some honey edamame and a few skewers. The drinks options are quality and complimentary. The restaurant is decorated nicely and it is pleasant to sit at the bar and watch the food be cooked. At $50 for two with a drink as well, very good price for the quality.

Gyu Tataki with truffle butter creamSake Clams – great winter warmerIka karaage (fried baby squid)Grilled Miso EggplantTried a few of the Yakimono (Charcoal Grilled Skewers) – pork belly, scallop, chicken gizzard, beef rib finger and ox tongue. They taste ok, but had a few really tough and chewy ones (particularly the beef skewers), while others were really tender and delicious.Okonomiyaki was a bit of a let-down. Had the Hiroshima and it was quite thick, soggy and mushy in the centre. We did enjoy the grill forest mushrooms and fried chicken though. We were adventurous enough to try the thinly sliced pig’s ear, deep fried with chill and salt. It definitely looked and tasted better than we expected. Probably not an all-time favourite kind of dish, but a good, interesting dish to try when you have your gutsy hat on.

Ordered the original okonomiyaki and it was such a dissapointment. The batter in the centre was not cooked properly leaving a liquidy mash of cabbage and flour, the sauce wasnt sufficient and the portion was small. The presentation of food and service was good though.

Came here specially to try the okonomiyaki, and Im glad I did! Both the original and k-squid were delicious. K-squid was really quite spicy but I liked the spicy. The pancakes were light and tasted healthy like a salad. Will try their other dishes next time

Inspired by the street food of Japan, the guys from @NoodleForum are behind this trendy eatery. At @HissAndSmoke you can have a taste of savoury pancakes, charcoal-grilled skewers, all things deep-fried and even beef tataki. We tried a bit from every corner of the menu and unfortunately wouldn’t hurry to go back.Although yakitori literally means grilled chicken, it also refers to skewered grilled food in general . We ordered a variety of meat and came to the conclusion that we would just stick to the chicken section next time. While those crunchy chicken soft bone, chewy gizzard, soft heart and crispy skin were nicely charred, juicy and delicious , pork belly and beef rib finger were rather average . Perhaps there is a reason why the Japanese name literally and specifically translates as grilled chicken.Fried drumlettes were pretty boring , with the chicken being rolled in a rather thick batter, leaving the deep-fried end product tough and dry, calling out to mayonnaise and BBQ sauce for some moisture. I thought cajun was a strange choice of seasoning as it was very overwhelming. A simple sprinkle of shichimi togarashi would have made more sense.Okonomiyaki was the most disappointing thing ever . The whole thing was pale blonde, not crispy and almost on the verge of being undercooked. There was hardly any pork belly so we were left with a mushy mess of cabbage and batter towards the end.Beef tataki’s texture was tender and melty, but they were sliced too thick . The delicate citrus ponzu would have been a better compliment if the pieces were half the thickness. instagram.com

After coming back from Japan not too long ago, this brought back all the memories of Hiroshima and Osaka. Flavours, colours, smells and sounds – ingredients to an amazing meal. Although seating might be difficult to get, its worth the wait. Do try the skewers as well as theyre all juicy and fresh.

Great for sharing or eating selfishly! Japanese pancakes are a must-try. We had both the Angus beef (thinly cut, so soft) and the citrus pork. Sides are delicious too, go the tofu. If you have time, the skewers are a staple here.
