I have followed Soul Provider on FB for years and never got to try the food. So when I heard that they had opened up in Yagan square I decided to see what the fuss was about. I ordered the Haitian Soul Plate. To say I was disappointing would be an understatement. The mix veg was inedible, the black bean sauce (one of the main reasons I ordered this meal) was bland as was the chicken. The Pikliz were tasty and crunchy. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same for anything else on that plate.I’m not sure my soul can recover from this experience.
Located in the new Yagan Square, SPC has a range of interesting items including Hush Puppies, Shrimp Gumbo and the Bourbon & Ginger Glazed Carrot! I went to this packed place for lunch and tried their southern chicken po-boy sandwich! It was decent – the chicken was really good but the whole sandwich only have 4 pieces of it, which is a tad bit too few in my opinion. Apart from the chicken, nothing really stands out from the sandwich.
We ventured into the City for the first time in forever and decided to try the southern fried chicken and waffles at Soul Provider Catering. Mostly because it seemed like the kind of food we should try at least once in our life time. And it was really, really good. The chicken was spicy and crispy on the outside which a deliciously moist and tender centre. Perfect. The waffle – savoury, not sweet so a new experience for us – was really light and perfect for soaking up the spicy sauce that came with the chicken. So the ambience isn’t perhaps the most exciting (I prefer a cafe than a food hall) but the food was really good and the crew behind the counter were friendly and efficient. Give it a go.
The promise of truffle aioli was enough to lure me into ordering the mac n cheese balls from the Food Truck at the Good Food and Wine show yesterday. Two balls, 1 okra, and spicy slaw was OK for $12. I was hoping for the balls to be a little cheesier and with discernible macaroni, but they seemed more like a fried dumpling of kinds. Tasty still, and the aioli was fantastic! I have to admit I had food envy as I saw the chicken wings and pulled pork burgers being served up while waiting for my order.
We were lucky enough to try the chicken and sausage Gumbo $12. At the food and wine show ..Absolutely amazing, spices perfect . Would highly recommend this dish, and we are eager to try the pulled Pork.
I love a good food truck and I love pulled pork but so many places get it wrong. Soul Provider Catering is no such place, theirs is bang on. The pulled pork roll with slaw and cajun fries is absolutely delicious. The fries are really good and the pork is juicy. Top spot with great guys behind the counter! lifelovetravelfood.wordpress.com
