Pity this is the only cafe around pre-Penguin Island day tripping. The food is very average and you’re probably better off bringing a picnic. I ordered the Chicken Foccacia with Cheese and Avocado. There were not enough ingredients to fill the large bread roll. It wasn’t very appetising. Coffee was a little weak for my liking. I did like the cute coffee cups and distance to the pier though.
We only found out when we bought tickets to Penguin Island that there was no food for sale on the island so with only 5 minutes to spare we quickly bought 4 chicken BLT’s. The bread was so dry and inedible. The filling was sparse and for $12.50 per roll we felt incredibly ripped off. We had to just try and eat the filling as we had no other alternative. Very disappointed as we had overseas guests with us.
Slice of Coffee Heaven!. I’m a cafe slut from way back and worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years starting in the kitchen sink to opening and running cafes and restaurants, before starting a free restaurant guide displaying Wellington’s finest restaurants in NZ so I’ve visited alot of restaurants and cafes. So I’m in Safety Bay and stumbled across what use to be a Kiosk when we first arrived in W.A. Is now the makings of a great cafe in Rockingham! The coffee was a blessing from above! Sandwiches, packed with goodies, good Black-Board selections and Fish & Chips cost $13.50! Counter staff willing to go above and beyond for their customers! Finally a place where I can go and have a cuppa, read the local paper, chat with the locals while being spoilt from the lovey girls behind the counter. Yes the prices can get up there if you’re doing a trip to the island with your family but at $15.00 for a crammed packed Panini and the BEST coffee in Rockingham! Worth it, worth it, worth IT!! Too many times, NO… Every time I’ve gone to get coffee from Fremantle to Mandurah, I might as well have thrown $5.00 in the bin! No other coffee comes close to Benita, Tara and Rosie’s coffee in the area!! Well worth the 20 minute drive for my slice of heaven and recommended to all.
Give yourself time if you are going to the island. If you are going to pengos during high tourist season, be prepared for a long wait. The adult menu is worth it, but the children’s burgers – you may as well get them a Mcdonald’s burger. I’m sure they use a cheap meat pattie for the children’s menu. The quality of the food depends on who is in the kitchen. The coffee is great and they seem to be bringing in healthier lunch choices. Bring a hat, suncream and extra jacket. It was really windy when we were last there and there’s not much shaded seating.
Nice alternative to usual fast food. The burgers are delicious and made on real bread. The selection from the counter is also something you’d find in an inner city cafe. Coffees are fantastic and their beer batter chips are usually excellent. too many flies in the warmer weather and wish they had a better drinks selection. The juices are so expensive they may as well try and stock some of the better brands.
Pengo’s did it again. Had a chocolate milkshake. Perfect consistency and just enough flavouring. Also had a cheeky ‘Cheeky Chicken’ burger. Bun was a bit tough but maybe that’s the Rocko way and I’m a little bit soft. Aioli, chilli jam and avo ontop of the chicken was an absolute treat. 7/1031 Oct, 2013Come for the penguins, Stay for the Pengo’s. Penguins are cute and fluffy and so are the wonderful staff at Pengo’s. They are ever so welcoming to their near-island habitat. Pengo’s has sealed this day as the best god damn day in my life.
