You’re never short of a sushi place in Edmonton and since Takami Sushi just opened not too long ago, I had to check it out. Located on the southside it’s easy to find. There’s plenty of parking spots in a quiet business area just off Gateway Boulevard. The restaurant itself is brand new with modern decor. The opening is somewhat narrow but there’s ample space for seating once you go deeper in. The kitchen/bar is open so you can see all the action. My girlfriend and her friend went on a Saturday evening and it was moderately busy. We got seated right away and their menu is ample enough but simple/focused with decent selection for their Nigiri. They even have omakase if you fancy that. We started with their Beef Tataki and two orders of Takoyaki. Their Beef Tataki is presented wonderfully. Unlike most places that opt for a soy/ponzu sauce, Takami uses yuzu which is probably my favourite Japanese ingredient. It adds a subtle umami citrusy flavour to the Beef Tataki. Their Takoyaki is on par with other places, crispy yet soft middle with plenty of octopus bits on the inside. Each order is 5pcs for 6$ which is very good value for money when compared to other places that charge $8+ for less or equal pieces. We got 2 rolls, their Dynamite Roll and the Fire Sake Roll. Both rolls were rolled perfectly and presented nicely. The Fire Sake Roll was a delight as it had amazing texture with the tempura bits on top. Next was the Deluxe Assorted Sashimi which comes with 18pcs and this is the first time I’ve seen (in Edmonton) theatrics put on for presentation. They pour water into a vessel with liquid nitrogen as they serve you which is a nice touch. The selection was fantastic, sea bass, akami & chu toro with salmon, squid, and tako (octopus). The quality of their fish is simply superb, probably some of the best quality fish I’ve had in Edmonton ever. They also don’t skimp on the size of the sashimi pieces. I was pleasantly surprised with Takami Sushi. Kind of like Vietnamese joints it’s hard to get excited when a new Japanese restaurant opens up but Takami has got it. Will I be back, hell yes I’ll be back.
Best presentation and very nicely prepared dishes. Sushi was fresh and very generous portions. I’ve eaten sashimi here that I wouldn’t try just anywhere! I’ll be back for sureAnd I have been back several times. Wakami Salad is unreal and the Salmon Toro is absolutely amazing. It is a tad pricey but the quality is top notch.
Takami is a new Japanese restaurant on Calgary trail, right across from Asian express hotpot south side location. It wasn’t bad, portions were okay however that was it. The fish was fresh, presentation is beautiful and the rolls were nice. Everything tasted decent, however I was kinda expecting more. The interior and service is fantastic, I think this place is worth a try.
I found Takami Sushi a bit hard to find, it’s located behind a new building in a fairly quiet neighbourhood near Calgary Trail. I stopped by on a Monday evening where we were greeted by a host who promptly seated us. I noted how new and modern the place looked – they definitely put a lot of effort into the decor in the benches. My friend and I looked over their relatively limited menu (two pages) and settled on each getting a miso soup, and splitting the assorted sashimi, spicy salmon roll, and fire sake roll. Service was quite slow but friendly. We had to wait a while before our orders were taken, though we did receive our drinks fairly quickly. We found the miso soup to be a large portion size and from what I noticed they didn’t seem to use miso powder which was an added bonus. My friend overall enjoyed the sashimi the most. I noted the freshness immediately when tasting it. Edmonton rarely has Japanese places that sell fresh sashimi, and this is definitely one of the few in Edmonton that does. It’s definitely up there with other good high quality Japanese places in Edmonton like Japonaise Bistro. However as expected, prices were a bit higher for the freshness you receive (a bit more pricey than Japonaise Bistro – we got 14 pieces for $29). My favourites were the rolls. The mayo that came with each of the rolls really enhanced the flavour and allowed the rolls to melt in the mouth. You can’t go wrong with either choice.Service overall was slow but good. I really enjoyed having conversations with the staff and they were never too intrusive and always came at the right time to fill drinks and check in. This place is a solid addition to the sushi scene in South Edmonton. It’s a bit pricier than most Edmonton sushi places, but I’d say that they have one of freshest sashimi in Edmonton. I hope that when I stop by for dinner that they eventually expand their menu to have a combo like I saw for their lunch. I’d love to try their other dishes. All in all, recommended.
This place is nicely laid out and they have some unique menu items…although its pretty pricey.Check out the cool presentation of the shashimi using dry ice and a small volcano on ice. Very cool!
I’ve been to many sushi restaurants in Edmonton and was very surprised with the quality of this one! The dcor is very modern and the glass walls allow a lot of natural lighting. We ordered the Beef Tataki, an order of miso soup, TNT rolls, Fire Sake rolls, and Spicy Salmon Rolls. The Miso soup was not the best, a little bit bland but it did have mushrooms in it which I love so that was a bit different than usual sushi restaurants. The Beef Tataki was well made, although I felt like the beef was sliced a little bit thick so it made it somewhat difficult to chew. very delicious nonetheless. The rolls were the best part of the meal, the TNT rolls are a must-try! I don’t know what the sauce was that they used with it but it was incredibly savoury and a bit sweet.I’m usually not a fan of torched salmon due to the fact that most restaurants butcher it but they were great in the Fire Sake rolls. If you are still hungry after the meal they do offer Green Tea or Sesame flavoured ice-cream which are both delightful.I will definitely be returning
I couldn’t believe this gem was so close to home. Sushi was so fresh the fish melted in your mouth. The waiter and host were very friendly. This is a must go if you’re a sushi lover.
