Beer list is fantastic. Love the atmosphere. Pizza is surprisingly good, but he kitchen closes early. Only thing that is lacking is the staff, they can be great, but they can also be rude if you’re not a hipster.
My favorite pub in Calgary. No TVs, eclectic music from the staff’s various iPods. Fooseball or pool upstairs, a nice (tiny) outdoor balcony and front veranda, quirky decor, a curmudgeonly owner who can be a bit serious, but who understands what makes a good watering hole, and keeps a great staff team.The tap is awesome, great variety of indie beers. The only tap in town that I know of to serve Howe Sound! The kitchen makes a fantastic house made pizza – perfect crust! The nachos are really cheesy, really, really cheesy (in fact too cheesy).I enjoy it best on week nights when the crowd are mostly ‘locals’. Weekends tend to be crowded, with less beer aficionados and a more Ship and Anchor type crowd. The hours are another thing I respect about the Hop. M-F opening at 5, Sat open at 6 and closed on Sundays. Would I like to go to the Hop for lunch, yes, but the shorter hours make me appreciate it more!
