Incredibly quaint restaurant – A reservation is definitely needed prior to coming here. The portions are not skimpy and the service was terrific!I ordered the Japa Rice Bowl for $14 and there was SO MUCH FOOD. So much GOOD food, at that. Every bite was delicious and well worth its price.
Stumbled upon this place by accident and it has turned out to be one of my regular favourites. If you havent had the signature ramen dishes at Redheads Japa Cafe, its an absolute must!! The perfect combination of flavours and heat. I would highly recommend the ramen, while other dishes Im sure are equally enjoyable, Im just unable to come to this restaurant without getting the soup.
The Japanese are really good at making curry. And if you are a fan of curry, I strongly recommend the curry here at Japa – it is one of the best I’ve ever had. The curry sauce is at the right heatness and it’s thick but not too thick. I think they use sushi rice and it’s got that chewy texture that, when combined with the curry sauce, really makes you satisfied.Having said that….My experience today has been an extremely weird one. First of all, because I didn’t make any reservation, my husband and I were asked to sit at the bar counter. Which is fine. We ordered our curry, and when I was down to my last bite, the server came to us suddenly and asked us to move to a table because a group of 3 came in, they had no more tables, and the bar counter was the only place that have 3 seats. I said to her but I was down to my last bite (she could see our food). She said it’s OK she’s going to move the plate for us.I just do not understand. Why is it so important that you need to give our counter immediately? Why can’t you explain to the customers to ask them to wait for 2 minutes? Just 2 minutes, no? It’s not very usual that I feel unwelcomed. I want to believe that’s not the intention, but I have to say I felt insulted. I did not finish the food (even though it’s just the last one bite) and left. It’s really frustrating that when a restaurant can make very good food and I don’t know if I should bother coming back again.Regardless, the food is good, so it still deserves a good score. I guess I just have to work harder to perfect my own beef curry rice at home.
Always nice and friendly service. Food is awesome! You can not eat these reasonable price anywhere in Calgary. Especially Saturday and Sunday buffet.
Probably one of my favourite restaurants in Calgary, Redheads is a cosy, authentic Japanese cafe that serves delicious, hearty food. I love the miso-katsu bento box (tender, juicy breaded pork with an addictive miso sauce, served alongside rice, a refreshing green salad, lightly salted edamame, and stewed root vegetables all for $12). Their curry is rich, flavourful, and filled with carrots, potatoes, and shredded beef. I love the idea of japanese tapas, and the Chikuzen-ni ($5) here is delicious – subtly sweet and beautifully cooked. Portions are very generous, everything always tastes very fresh, and the service is incredibly friendly – definitely worth a visit!
Small authentic Japanese restaurant in downtown. Staff are friendly. Food is pretty good however Ive had better tonkatsu elsewhere in Calgary before. Its not as tender and juicy as their competitors. The curry is really good, theres actually meat and veggies in the curry. I love coming here for the Taiyaki – waffle sandwich with red bean filling thats shaped like a fish. The waffle batter is crispy and chewy and its loaded with red bean inside.
Cozy little restaurant with great prices. I would recommend their crispy karaage, perfectly breaded katsu with flavourful curry. Rice sandwich with salmon or shrimp tempura fillings are also delicious. My husband also liked slider with spicy karaage. They have buffet on the weekends, if you are hungry, go for that, there is a small buffet table with already made salad, katsu sticks, roasted mushrooms and Japanese carrot. I liked roasted mushrooms and carrots, and other than those, most of the food are required to order and freshly made. If you crave for ramen, you have to wait until after 12:00 to order, I guess ramen soup requires longer time to prepare. I still havent had their ramen yet, I usually go early so that I will have a table for sure.
