Quite possibly the shittiest place on the planet. Tired old jam, tired old servers (unsure why they are tired as they never move), tired old everything. It could be so much better, but there is no willingness on behalf of the owner(s) to make it something decent – which may be the reason they sold half the bar to Pizza 73?
This place is a f@#king joke . The food is terrible. The red head behind the bar needs to cover her chest up. Out dated furniture, old and gross. Would never recommend this place to any one.
Food was basic, Nothing really stood out. Order a side of cheese toast and it was basically melted cheese on a slice of white bread…. Blt was ok. Too much red onion on the potato skins. Probably won’t eat there again. Got very sick after eating here. Don’t not recommend.
Unfortunately, there are not many options in Bowness for a few adult beverages, pub style. You basically have this place, or the Bowness Pub… honestly, I would rather go outside the community than take my chances here anymore. However, right now they are in the midst of some renos that may be a sign of some changes – a patio is now installed and they have put in large windows that open out front. We are really big on trying to support the businesses in Bowness, but Hexters makes it tough. We never eat here anymore, we did wings once and both got sick. Since then, have heard horror stories from friends who used to work in the kitchen, and had the pleasure of watching from our booth one night as the kitchen staff wiped down counters and other surfaces with what was already a very dirty looking rag, wipe his brow with it, then proceeded to use the same rag to wipe the tops of some sauce containers and utensils they were using to make food. Then use those items to serve a meal to the table next to us. The service is hit or miss – often it’s beyond brutal – slow, non-attentive and generally disinterested in being there. On a few occasions we have had a great server, but she’s often over run and is sometimes the only one on shift. We aren’t regular, and I have noticed now that if they don’t know you, the bartenders will rarely give you the time of day, so don’t bother trying to go to the bar to get your drinks to speed things up. Have also had some unfortunate experiences with the clientele this place draws on occasion as well. When you get harassed by patrons and have to step around folks spitting on the ground right in front of the main entrance, it tends to make a female hesitate to go in. This isn’t Hexter’s fault, and I don’t hold it against them. I only mention it because that does detract from the atmosphere and may keep some folks away. I tried to get a few girlfriends to meet me here one night for a drink, they flat out refused based on similar experiences. Makes it a tough sell. I want this place to be better. Hopefully the reno’s are a sign of good things to come. Fingers crossed I can post an updated review later this year, with glowing praise.
Wings aren’t too bad. Went on a cheap wing night. The place wasn’t too busy, the waitress came by regularly to refill drinks and reorder wings. The wings weren’t bad, and there was a good selection of flavours. We were disappointed with the french fries – they were extremly soggy. However the waitress was good about it and didn’t charge for them. We would probably go back…but only for wings and drinks.
Not my type I guess. I went there on an afternoon when there was a blues band. The band was excellent but it was just another grungy bar to me. The tables and chairs looked like they got them from Walmart. The type of people who were coming in looked as if they were either homeless, drunks, hippies, or drug addicts which is far from my crowd. I’d say if someone has the least bit of standards, this isn’t the place to go. I left within a half an hour without buying anything. The waitresses were extremely slow and did not even come to our table. They were socializing in the corner which is unacceptable. The wine list sucks badly. They didn’t even have a proper cash register so the waitress did not even barely know how to count money since I had decided to try and order an iced tea but she had some sort of purse of her own to take the cash in but she was reluctant to even give me proper change back. I will not go back to this place again.
Hexters. I do admit I only go for sunday jam and oh my if you have never been you are missing out on a great jam, but a earth moving experience. You can feel the love, the spirituality the room just rocks. Can not comment on the food, have never eaten. The waystaff seemed very good at their jobs when I was there, just not enough of them. The bar tenders may be a little slow which might cause a little bottle neck then the patrons start lining up at the bar and I believe a gong show erupts at this point. Maybe one more bartender is the answer for just the partons that do not want to sit. Then two for the waystaff. Not the end of the world, this is a clean, huge wonderful bar. Give it a chance I know it is worth it. 🙂
