I love spicy soup….the spicier the better….this authentic Singapore laksa kicks my ass every time. Server asked how spicy…..I told her you cant get it spicy enough….well they managed. Wowza…..so good, tasty filled with noodles and broth that will burn your lips hot…love it. $13 a bowl is well worth the punishment. Other dishes here are great to try as well…skewers, chicken, roti…I cant say enough. If you want to try a variety I would recommend going to more than 4-6 people. Otherwise you will be stuck with a hearty bill…and lots of left overs. Price: $$Service: Taste:
After a dismal chinese burger which was bit of dry pork in 2 pieces of bread like bookends.. we found Tropika. Yesteryears .. satays used to be half price during lunch. Now if you become a member u can have 6 for half price. We also tried the curry beef brisket with haikanese rice for extra buck. We also had a rice noodle dish with chinese sauage and fish paste slices. It was all pretty good and enough for left overs. Interestingly. .. the other half of tropika is now a northern chinese resturant called Blossom.
My wife and I lived in Sumatra Indonesia for 8 years and made numerous trips to Malaysia so we are quite aware of the Malaya dishes and looked forward to our lunch. Not many patrons in the restaurant so the service was good. We ordered one of our favorites beef rendang, veg Kang Kong a water spinach typical for SE Asia, and Hokkien Mee egg noodle dish. The food was brought within 10 minutes! The rendang was not very spicy and lacked coconut flavor unlike the true Malay rendang. Kang Kong was stringy and lacked the usual Malay garlic, chili, and fish sauce or in other words bland. The only winner was the Hokkien mee which was pretty much perfect. I suppose not many Canadians know what true Malay food should taste like but this place obviously does not either. Thai and Chinese foods were also on the menu and I dare say they probably don’t excel at any one of those either. We will try other restaurants rather than return to the Tropika. Shame.
We were craving for Asian food and stumbled upon Tropika in south edmonton . It is a Malaysian and Thai fusion restaurant. We ordered Indonesian spring rolls, Nasi goreng fried rice and beef rendang. The food portions were enough for 2 people. The service was quick and the food was lovely !
We had a great meal there about a year ago – good green curries. Then we went back this week and were pretty disappointed. The pad thai was quite greasy and really strange – unlike any pad thai we had had before. The pineapple rice had really low grade canned pineapple and frozen vegetables.
First off: you NEED to make a reservation on weekends. This place is absolutely bustling, and if you’re bringing a date here, you do NOT want to be the couple waiting on the side for a table. That being said we made reservations and were seated promptly. The service was great and the food was served in a timely manner. I LOVED the curry and bread. It was the perfect mix of spices, spicy and salty. Next up we ordered the beans with shrimp. Let me tell you something: I do NOT eat beans, but these were amazing. I devoured over half of the platter, and the serving sizes are huge so that says something. We also ordered the fried rice in a pineapple. I’ve never seen something like this before so it was refreshing to see and even better to eat! The last and ONLY thing I hated and absolutely despised is the Assam Ayam… It was ABSOLUTELY disgusting. Why? The chicken in it was clearly old. No one ate it… That is why if I ever return I’d probably never get a meat dish…Quite frankly I believe if a dish costs you $16 it should be of good if not great quality! That’s where Tropika lost me unfortunately… As to whether I’d return? That is still up for debate…
Love this restaurant. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The beef basil fried rice is a must try. Their lemon chicken and satays were delicious as well. Food was well prepared and came to our table at a great time considering how busy it was. Delicious.
