New location open now, getting into their groove and food was fantastic. Highly recommend pie milkshakes to go with the sandwich, and the tater tots with nacho cheese are a great side.

I was really excited to check Grate & Barrel out on Sunday for lunch, but they had run out of food & were closed. I’ve heard great things about the food & the prices are really appealing so hopefully we can check it out soon. (Obviously I think my rating will change! I hope they figure it all out cuz it’s an awesome idea!) whoalansi.com

Delicious new grilled cheese place in Mission. Glad my coworker told me about this place. Grate & Barrel has a nice unique character to it. Nothing fancy but the grilled cheeses they off will leave u satisfied. We came on a Monday afternoon and it was pretty quiet as it’s still new. We ordered the Northern Beauties which consisted of popcorn shrimp and the Jann Arden which was like a burger. We were soo full after sharing the 2 grilled cheese. My friend also got the pumpkin milkshake which she loved. Definitely will be back to try the hogpuncher which they were sold out of. Great simple comfort food. lapetitteshar.com

Grate and Barrel is a specialty food joint that addresses the importance of one of my personal favourites – a grilled cheese sandwich. Situated where Mission Diner used to be, the new owners have left most of the original decor in place, making this place more on the casual side of dining. The set up includes ordering and paying for your food up front, before picking it up when your name is called. I found the service to be quick and friendly, but noted that there was limited seating as well, so it might not be the best place for catching up with friends, but rather a place to grab a grilled cheese on the go. I decided to order the huevos rancheros grilled cheese, and was definitely left feeling satisfied. The bread was toasted nice and crispy, and the fried egg combined with the assortment of cheeses made each bite a savoury experience. At $7, it doesn’t exactly break the bank either, making Grate and Barrel a reasonable choice to grab lunch on the go. Definitely a welcome addition to Calgary’s food scene, and I can’t wait to try out the other types of grilled cheeses they have available!

Its nice to see some modestly priced comfort food down in Mission!!! Tomato basil soup was awesome for dipping. And as the weather gets colder ya’ll need a grilled cheese!! (Not to mention very Arsenal friendly staff)

Nice transformation of former Mission Diner space into something that I think can best be described as what it’d be like if Tubby Dog served grilled cheese instead of hot dogs. I got the one with kimchi and pulled pork; it’s called the Hogpuncher (cheeky names for all of the sandwiches- many are named after Calgary bands and musicians; there’s a Jann Arden, a Dudes, a Chixdiggit, etc, sadly no Raleigh yet and there won’t be a Viet Cong until they decide on a new name but I digress) and it was BRILLIANT. $8 for a huge fistful of deliciousness, perfectly crispy and greasy but there’s love there too, and a whole lot of flavour with very tender pork. I didn’t think the sandwich would be enough for me (it was, actually) so I got a very nice cup of broccoli and cheese soup. It was excellent but absolutely nuclear hot and it’s served in a paper coffee to-go cup- I hope they rethink this, because you cannot sip this as the cup is supposed to encourage because it’s too hot- mine was anyway. I’m sure this is a work in progress so no biggie. Two customers next to me were getting shakes of some description and they looked completely amazing. A winner all around and the sort of place we don’t have, yet, enough of in Calgary. Good comfort food, good value, class act.
