Katsuten is certainly a hidden gem, tucked away in a strip mall and serving some of the best katsu I’ve had. I arrived on a Friday evening and the restaurant was already packed, with a line quickly forming. We were quickly seated by the incredibly friendly staff. Inside, the small restaurant is very welcoming (and pretty adorable), with sunny walls and big windows. After pouring over the menu for awhile, I decided to order the Okonomi-Katsu ($15.90), and my friends got the Katsu Don ($13.90) and Chicken Katsu ($15.90). The miso soups that came with each of our orders arrived quickly, and they were definitely some of the best I’ve had in Calgary restaurants: umami-rich while not being overly salty, and served with just the right amount of tofu and spring onion. Our main courses soon arrived, and portions are very generous. The two katsu courses came with a delicious shredded cabbage salad: crisp, refreshing, and served with an addictively creamy and tangy dressing. The Okonomi-Katsu came heaped with fish flakes, curling from the steam of the katsu, and was drizzled with japanese mayo and okonomi sauce. And I have to say, the katsu here is pretty incredible. The breading is so impossibly light and crisp, it’s almost like eating air (albeit golden, perfectly seasoned air), and the meat inside is tender, moist, and full of flavour. The dipping sauce that comes with the katsu is also delicious (I unashamedly ate it just with rice). I also tried the Katsu Don – a marriage of crispy batter and creamy egg all bathed in a scrumptious sauce that had just a hint of sweetness. One of the best meals I’ve had in a long time, I will undoubtedly be back to try everything on the menu.

Food has improved since opening day and everything was super tasty during my most recent visit. I’ve tried a few different dishes so far, food has been definitely improving. Cute little joint, it’s more of a place to hang out with a few friends as it is small.

Good but not great. I found the food looks better than it tasted. The meat of the tonkatsu weren’t very flavourful. We got the original and the okonomaki flavoured one (forgot the name. I’m the worst for that). The outer coating of the tonkatsu was different than I imagined. It was more flaky and crispy than crunchy. It almost had like a disintegrating crisp than a lot of bite/body like Korean fried chicken. We also got the cheese tonkatsu which was actually my favourite of the three we had. The cheese was less stringy than I imagined tho. The cream curry udon was really good. The cream with the curry paired well. I didn’t imagine that combo would go well. But it was great. I felt like you didn’t get too much tho. Not very much stuff In the curry beyond the udon but even then it wasn’t a lot of udon. I found the price was also a bit high for what you get. We all left still hungry after spending nearly 20$ a person. Service was great tho!

Nice new place to try with very reasonable portions, the food is very well presented and tasty as the pork was not dry at all and the breading was not soggy; the flavours go well with each other and the rice is cooked well. Service was good and I was not left raising my hand or calling over for service. General atmosphere was fine some of the music was not my style but it was not grating and the decor was nice and simple.

Nice place with tasty food and good service. The katsu curry was tender and the curry had nice flavour just right and not overpowering. Comfortable seating as well.

Cute little joint. Definitely good place to think about if you’re going on a date. Service was good, environment was nice and the food was great.I had this mashed potato on top of soup / Curry thing and it was good. The takoyaki and the gyoza were on point. The pork cutlet was covered in an interesting crisp that was unlike any other Japanese place I’ve tried so far. They had this bottled peach soda which was really good too.Definitely coming back to try more of the menu.

Very cute little restaurant! The service was amazing and the food was 10/10. They get their supplies from local shops in Calgary. And it definitely adds to the quality. Must try their cheese katsu!
