Bbq pork was good, char siu dry. This review is not for the lunch box, just the bbq meats. One thing I do like about Wai’s is their selection of cooked meats. Unlike the other bbq meat places in Chinatown, which offer bbq duck, soya chicken, char sui, bbq pork, and sometimes sausage, this place also has aged/dark soya pig stomach and intestines, a real delicacy ! When I went they also had (I presume) pig’s feet in bean curd sauce. I purchased about $4 worth of char sui and bbq pork, plus $3 worth of pig stomach. The bbq pork was good, it was cooked well, moist, abit tough but still tender, and the skin was very crunchy. Bean paste sauce they use to coat the inside was not overpowering, so you still get a hint of the bean paste plus good pork taste.I wasn’t a big fan of their char sui however. Even though it had good flavour, a hint of sweetness from the red colouring yet strong pork flavour, I found the meat overly dry, to the point where is tastes like it was overcooked. Parts of the char sui was so dry it had the texture like week old croutons.Pig stomach was good, albeit a tad salty. it was cooked just right, not too tender where it would taste like a gelatinous goop, but firm enough so it was chewy but not like gum chewy. Very flavourful.Despite the dry char sui, I would return but most likely not purchase the char sui.Just an update, I noticed on their menu board that the lunch box menu is no longer $5, but $7.
Awesome takeout. Okay want to be absolutely stuffed for 5 bucks? This is your best and tastiest option. It’s takeout only but go here get a ricebox with bbq pork and roast pork. Get the ginger green onlon garnish and you’re good to go. Take it over to the park at James Short and enjoy. 5 bucks man!
