Been coming to Spruce Grove for almost 30yrs. First time, I was advised my trip would not be complete without a trip to Jacks for a mushroom burger & liquorice milkshake. They totally delivered. The burger was tasty, cheesy and chalk full of mushrooms and the milkshake oozed with liquorice flavour. Sadly, 6 or 8 Years ago, something changed. The burger became very average and lacking in flavour. So we decided on our next trip just to go for shakes. This time, the liquorice flavour was off and it seemed VERY sweet. We stopped making Jacks our regular visit and found some other great eats in town. Tonight we gave them one last shot for shakes. What a shame. The liquorice flavour just wasnt there. It might just as well have been billed as sugar flavour. Ive heard the ownership changed a few years back and maybe they took some secret recipes with them or maybe the new owners have just found a more thrifty way of food prep. Either way, I will remain hopeful & will keep an eye on the reviews when I come to town.
Been wanting to try this place for a while as spots done up like this (i.e. Vintage feel) always make me feel a certain way. The desire to have a great burger, milkshake and fries type experience always sets the expectations high. Upon waking in the decor was what you’d expect, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis are smack dab on the wall to the right when you enter. I ordered the double mushroom burger – I love a good mushroom burger. It was ready in under a minute and it looked decent. The patties are clearly the frozen variety but that isn’t an immediate disqualifier. Unfortunately they were bland and needed a good few shakes of seasoning (salt/pepper) and the mushroom sauce was also bland. There were a good amount of mushrooms but the overall flavor fell flat.
