Food and service were excellent. We had the game platter, lamb shank, bison flank steak and duck. Nice seating, cozy vibe and not too noisy. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will definitely visit again.
This is probably going to be one of the most biased reviews Ive ever written. Dont get me wrong – the place is great! The restaurant next door (Big Fish Dockside) is owned by the same people, and its my favourite in the city. Open Range wouldve been a solid 5.0 if it werent for the country music on the background. I get it, were in Alberta, and it is a steakhouse, but country music is, for the most part, the genre you either love or absolutely cannot stand. Like I said, it is my personal preference, and the majority of Albertans will likely not mind that at all, I simply wouldnt go if I knew they played country. We were the only customers at the time and asked to turn the music down or change it. They politely apologized and said that they couldnt change the music. Again, we had no problem with that. The place decides the atmosphere, we werent there to reinvent their identity. There was some old school blues mixed in with the country, which solved the issue for me.Aside from the ambiance, the place is great – delicious food, knowledgeable staff, great selection of cocktails. Would definitely recommend to anyone who doesnt mind occasional country on the background.
The beef tenderloin is to die for. Legitimately one of the best things I have ever eaten in Calgary. I have never tried anything here other than the tenderloin so I can’t comment on other menu items. In conclusion get the tenderloin.
A good meal. The waiting staff and the decor are very pleasant. Excellent pecan pie and good selection of wines. Went on a Sunday and it was not busy.
We went just before our groupon was set to expire. Cozy Friday night date night. Started with the bone marrow and salad, had the lamb and my partner had the porterhouse. Both of which were melt in your mouth. Service was outstanding, food was OUTstanding!! We can’t wait to go back
Good — extremely good, in fact. Borderline excellent. But boring. Imagine your moms pot roast with mashed potatoes and greens that actually taste like something other than broiled cardboard. Scalloped potatoes? Comforting, sure. But that’s the kind of stuff Granny makes. It’s still Mom’s food, something you get on Sunday after church. Definitely not something I really want to pay $30+ a plate for, not including wine. This isn’t food that’s going to get me ahem, lucky if you know what I’m saying, unless I want my socks darned. I want a little more excitement for the money.
Best steak I’ve hard in years! I had the beef sirloin and my husband had the special chipotle steak; they were both awesome. Excellent service, rustic decor and top notch food make this little steak house that could stand out. I will be back and highly recommend open range to anyone looking for a delicious local steak.
