Probably my least favourite pho place in Calgary but its not terrible. I find the broth here very salty, like its made from a bouillon base. The ingredients are fresh though and the meat, broth, noodle ratio is decent.
It was a cold, windy October day. I was door knocking earlier and I was in the need of something hot and nourishing. I havent been to Pho Anh Huyen in ages, so I thought I would revisit. I ordered a regular bowl of coconut beef pho ($11.99). The bowl came out fast within five minutes of ordering. I was disappointed that the broth wasnt hot. With the addition of the cold bean sprouts and basil, the bowl was lukewarm.
The pho here is better than most nearby places (like Pho Kim or Pho So 1) but compared to even better places in Calgary, it’s really mediocre. The broth is a bit bland, particularly the bun bo hue, which has no kick nor pork hock, as another reviewer has mentioned. Their curry noodle soup is unusual (never seen this in any other pho restaurant) but that specialty probably has a following.
I got the seafood egg noodle soup. The service was fast and efficient but the food was underwhelming. The broth was tasteless and so was the seafood. Nothing special. I won’t go back.
Being a big fan of Bun Bo Hue, this place is pretty good. It has a nice spicy tang to it and uses a separate broth instead of their regular broth and adding a spoon of paste. What’s really missing (which would be nice) is adding pork hock or blood to their broth.Portion size is decent for their price and it’s one of the better quality ones compared to Pho Kim, pho so 1.Will support!!!
The place is a little dingy but I’ve learnt to overlook that she the food it good. Had chicken vermicelli. The chicken was dry but the portion was good size. Service was prompt. Would I go out of my way, probably not.
It was my first time dining here last week and I say their fried crab wanton w/ cream cheese wowed me the most. I just wasn’t expecting all the flavors exploding in and creating this perfect combination in my mouth, plus the portioning are enormous… I tried their beef pho noodles and the broth’s simplicity is just what I was looking for.. I didn’t even have to put anything in it… Their special fried rice? again for the price it’s packed with everything.. I think my minor complaint would be that the noodles weren’t warm or hot enough for me when it’s served…Second visit was yesterday night.. I ordered the crab w/ cream cheese again.. I dunno what happened but the portioning shrunk by 70%… I was a bit disappointed because I was expecting what was served to me the first time.. But all in all don’t be discouraged by the looks of this place they serve great dishes that you’ll sure crave and enjoy..
