My husband and I went to Grandin after reading a great review in the Edmonton Journal. We found the seafood chowder to be tasty with just the right balance of potato and seafood but not extremely rich in cream. My husband, who is originally from Nfld., prefers cod over any other fish, so we each ordered the cod and chips. We were shocked to get only one piece of cod and tons of fries-this would be laughed in Nfld. The waitress did not inform us about this. Although what we had was good, it was rather pricey at $16. We probably will not return, which is a shame for the business.
The newest and best place for fish and chips they said .. according to a local magazine. We came, we saw, we are and we left. Went for lunch with a few coworkers, sampled the entire fish menu. Each of us got a different fish, when asking the person taking our order what the difference was she didn’t know…sigh…. I will say this place was quick and clean. Unique ambiance and good to have a chat with friends….but as for the food. The chips were okay…. the fish, batter was super crispy and fresh, the fish itself was nothing to rave about…but did I say the batter was light and crispy? Maybe because it is still new…give it a few more months and maybe will head back.
Came here for lunch with some co-workers and since this place is fairly new we thought to give it a try (who doesn’t like fish and chips). It is located next to The Common, who parking is difficult in the area (be warned!). Walking in, I had very high expectations of the place as it was all over Instagram. We all basically ordered fish and chips and I was a tad surprised about the price we paid but though nothing as I was expecting great food. The food came out quickly and upon first glance the portions were smaller than typically. I am sad to say… I left hungry and unsatisfied. Overall, not bad, but I would not be going back.
Went here for dinner on Tuesday June 20th, 2017. Having been to London and really enjoyed the fish and chips there and trying to find a good place here is a bit hard. I figured I’d check this place out while I was in the downtown area and finding parking can be a pain in the ass. It was hard finding a spot, so I ended up parking 6 blocks away and walked there. I have also read some reviews before thinking about trying this place out and I had high expectations and hoping it would have been the best fish and chips for the price you are paying. It did not meet my expectation. 1 piece and fries; depending on what type of fish you get is between $12 to $16. The fish was alright; slightly moist and the batter was just okay. The fries was good but that is all I have to say about it. There was nothing that made me say wow about the fish and chips I got. I also left still feeling a bit hungry. I did enjoy the atmosphere though and of course the service/server was good. Overall, I thought it was a bit over priced and honestly, I dont think I would go out of the way for their fish and chips. Probably would not come back.
I was craving fish and chips and with most of the dedicated options located in downtown. My search led me to Grandin Fish ‘N’ Chips. Located right beside the Common, it’s pretty easy to find, but parking can be a hassle. It’s a neat little shop with the fish/sea decor going through out the place. You’ll have to order and pay at the counter first, before being seated. I’m not fond of it as there are no servers. They have a nice selection of fish to choose from but I just went with good old Cod ($14). My girlfriend got their Haddock ($14)and I also got their Seafood Chowder ($14) to share. The fish and chips came out pretty quickly. Hot and ready to eat. The batter is light but not super crispy, almost chewy even. But it was decent and my cod was moist and cooked nicely. Now in my opinion, they do not give you enough Tartar sauce. I barely had any leftover when I was done my fish :(. The fries seemed like they cut themselves and they were superb. Nicely fried and perfect amount of salt. The coleslaw was there to support but it was likely forgettable. The Seafood Chowder though faired worse. It came with a nice sort of clams, mussels & chunks of fish. But it was mostly bland/under seasoned. Tasted mostly like straight roux with milk and a little salt. Consistency was good, not too thin and not too thick. The Cheddar Biscuit was nice though, but it would of been tastier if it was served warm rather then stone cold. Overall, Grandin Fish ‘N’ Chips was okay. It won’t blow you away and it’s a little pricey I guess. Lunch was just shy of $50 with no drinks but water. I won’t be rushing back anytime soon.
It’s okay, I guess. This guy and I headed here for lunch, we had the cod & chips each, plus sausage rolls and the fried brussel sprouts. The fries were pretty crispy, the cod seemed a bit undercooked and slimey in the middle — not light and flakey. The tartar sauce was too mustardy, it didn’t really enhance the cod but tasted overpowering.Brussels sprouts seemed too caramelized, maybe it just isn’t to my tastes but it felt heavy and greasy.Sausage rolls were greasy mush rolls, but like, not good the good kind. The staff seemed nice, and the restaurant looked clean. So yeah, it’s okay, I guess.
Grandin fish and chips has gotten off to a running start. It’s only been open for a couple weeks, maybe a month and a bit, I’m not exactly sure. But it already has roaring success. The small dining area seems persistently packed and wait times can be long during peak hours. But Grandin fish and chips might impart a bit of the case of boojee blindness on it’s customers. Definitely it’s a good fish and chip shop, damn good. But the decor, the posh location adjacent to Edmonton luscious legislative grounds, and the exclusive-esq veneer imparted by the tiny stature of the space might be tainting the picture. Let’s look at this objectively. The fish is killer. Quality ingredients that are as fresh as the day is long can be guaranteed here, and that’s a big deal this far from the coast. But the prices and portions don’t stack up. A certain other fish and chip shop with a solid reputation in the Edmonton area offers cod fish and chips, for a couple bucks less AND twice the size. Now the quality isn’t quite as good but it isn’t leagues off either. Using another metric, local oyster shuckers typically sell shells at a price about 25% less (some as much as 50% on discount days, and still good quality). I understand that you are replacing quantity and price for freshness and quality but it’s a noticeable markup and a significant quantity disparity and I just feel that in the end you kind of get gougedHaving said that it was still a great meal. But I think Grandin is kind of getting overly generous hype for all the wrong reasons. If you get caught up in the buzz and the overwhelming poshness of it all it can be hard to notice the issues I pointed out, but take a step back and the view isn’t quite as picture perfect.
