Just visited the Boxcar Cafe for the first time. This place is so much fun! My husband and I spent a good 2.5 hours here playing board games, sipping coffee (I recommend the mocha), and popping tater tots into our mouths. Simple and small menu, perfect for snacking. Staff was very friendly and helpful explaining how it all works. Looking forward to playing again soon!
Great atmosphere. Wouldn’t try their Americano again, maybe try something else. The americano was a little light for my taste.Games was fun though.. Great way to get together and try new games!
Space is quite small, doesn’t fit many people. However, great selection of games and affordable activity. Food was decent but servers were friendly and offered to recommend games for us!
The location is excellent especially on a warm day but menu a little too small for my taste. We tried a couple popular items suggested by the server and they were ok. We’ll probably try it again but most likely for desert/coffee on the patio.
Ambience is contained, and although the menu is not overly sophisticated, there’s variety in terms of food types and beverages. I love the idea of the open kitchen so you can see the food being made and it’s really homey. Good selection of board games to last at least a couple of hours.
Boxcar Cafe is a friendly neighbourhood gem that specializes in light eats in an intimate setting. A friend of mine and some partners decided that Calgary needed a space downtown where diners and gamers alike can celebrate two of their biggest passions – board games and good food. Apart from the board game concept, I actually thought the food was a great fit as well. The chili tater tots with garlic aioli was a fresh taste on a traditional comfort food snack and easily one of my favourites. I also tried the grilled cheese sandwich, which came with three types of cheese nestled between two pieces of crispy bread, and a refreshing salad on the side. The coffee is also provided through Phil & Sebastian, so it makes for a great spot to caffeinate and game! The only consideration would be the sizing of the location, seating is limited so be sure to arrive early to grab a seat, definitely going to be one of Calgary’s newest hot spots!
